Forget the Rest and Go With the Best!

I am a professional humorist and storyteller. For years I have struggled with the need to continuously develop and deliver new material. I have read dozens of books on the subjects of humor and joke writing, but The Serious Guide to Joke Writing by Sally Holloway is by far the best.

Ms Holloway writes in a conversational and engaging style. Her prose is concise and boy, does she ever deliver! The chapters on Joke-Webs, the Hadron Joke Collider and the Surrealist Inquisition are gold mines. A longtime user of mind mapping, I was immediately able to put the joke web and Hadron Joke Collider ideas to use with excellent results. Not to worry though, if you are not familiar with mind mapping Ms Holloway's clear instructions and trouble-shooting guides will have you using both techniques in no time if you are willing to put in the work. The Surrealist Inquisition is proving to be a challenging technique, but one that I will spend more time with since I can easily see its ability to help come up with wildly funny ideas.

The book flows, pulling you along and guiding you through each exercise. If you are interested in writing jokes, humorous essays, monologues, or simply adding some punch to your presentations, I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Maybe there are some cultural differences

I'll start with the positive.
The author lays out some very helpful joke writing methods, most notably the "joke web". These won't write the jokes for you, but they will give you lots of very relevant information to create jokes. The book was easy to follow, and a overall a good quick read.

Negative.
I think perhaps because the author is British and I'm American, there may be a bit of a cultural gap in regards to what is funny. For example, the first chapter is about how to construct puns. I will admit that occasionally a pun is funny, but for the most part they should be avoided. She keeps coming back to puns throughout the book, which for me was a bit like literary nails on a chalkboard. I basically took her methods and removed the bits regarding puns, and that worked better for me. Also, I thought this book was a tad overpriced. I bought it new for $18, I think given the length of the book something closer to $12 would have been more fair.

The Ideal Quick and Dirty MBA Program

If one had to learn common sense in a hurry, then there is no better book for the task than Milo Sobel's The 12 Hour MBA Program. Dr. Sobel distills in a few hours what MBA grads pay thousands to learn over a two year period. Sobel's no-nonsense writing style and easy to understand prose make this book a thoroughly satisfying read.
The style and organization of the book are excellent. Dr. Sobel does a very good job of introducing and summarizing the main points, but does not delve too deeply into any particular topic. Though most of the content can be put to immediate use, some topics, such as queing theory, may not be of much value, while others, such as new venture information,would be most helpful.
In terms of content, the book presents a lot of useful information. The first two chapters give a good treatment of marketing, product management, and accounting. The book really pays for itself by the third chapter on human resources and operations management. The reader gets fresh insight into the corporate world, puts the various forms of learning into proper perspective, and presents the essence of operations management, all with an eye towards common sense. The fourth chapter presents an excellent introduction to statistics for business. However, the fifth chapter, economics, contains a few errors, and those who have had a rigorous economics course will be quick to catch them. Chapters six, seven and eight each focus on technology, ethics, and strategy, respectively. Finally, Dr. Sobel devotes chapter nine to education and career pathing, and includes an epilogue which encourages the reader to pursue what he calls the 'everyman's MBA'.
The book has two major strengths. The first is its no-nonsense approach to a topic that is made out to be too difficult for mere mortals to comprehend. The second is its practical perspective on business, the firm, and most importantly, the individual. By far the most useful chapters in the book are those devoted to human resources and career pathing. Moreover, after presenting the main MBA topics, without any hesitation Dr. Sobel asks the reader to consider well if an investment in time and resources to obtain the MBA is really worth it for oneself. Dr. Sobel does provide a good discussion on the pros and cons of getting an MBA, and strongly encourages the reader to live up to the words of Joseph Campbell and 'follow your bliss'.
Yet, the book does have a few minor weaknesses. The first and foremost weakness is that the reader does not learn the MBA jargon in-depth so that one can hold one's own against the top ten MBA school spin doctors. Second, most of the resources Dr. Sobel points the reader to for further reading are textbooks which may only be available in many cases at a university library. Third, in the age of the internet, he does not provide the web addresses for the organizations that he lists as contacts- a definite no-no. Finally, because Dr. Sobel presents only the bare basics of each topic, advanced readers may find this book a bit underdone.
Dr. Sobel successfully manages to bring up many interesting topics that one would definitely want to look into further. Overall, Dr. Sobel has created a fine text, and as such, is definitely worth putting prominently on one's bookshelf.

An OK overview, but...

...I didn't need 12 hours to read it. This is a cursory approach to material that demands more, much more. The entire book is easily digested in a half hour or so. This book provides an OK overview of the MBA curriculum, much like a one-day seminar or an expanded "B" school marketing brochure might. This book is by no means a useful tool, let alone a replacement for the formal education.
I can see why many people gave this a good review. It is easy to read and it does offer a brief summary of many of the concepts found in "B" school. However, it is really lightweight stuff. I would equate this to a Cliffs notes MBA, i.e. what's the point. There is really nothing of substance in this book that you can bite into. Just when you are ready to dig into the concept the chapter ends with a list of further reading. A better title for this book would be, "So Your Thinking Of Getting An MBA." I don't find this even a good reference tool to refresh a concept or calculation.
For a far more useful business reference tool that will provide meaty information found in a formal MBA program check out the "The Vest-Pocket MBA" instead. The VP MBA is much better value.

Atul Kochhar is one of the finest Indian chefs in the country, renowned for the vibrancy of his food and the subtlety of his spice mixes. He was one of the first two Indian chefs to be awarded a Michelin star and he has become the recognisable face of Indian cuisine on television. Hot off the presses, Penelope Quest's The Reiki Manual - a Comprehensive Guide for Reiki Stuents, Practitioners, and Masters is indeed comprehensive. Published by Tarcher and containing over 300 pages, it covers the Reiki experience from soup to nuts.

Quest, who has been practicing Reiki since 1990 and who has written several other books about it, participated in the UK Reiki Federation's effort to produce Core Curriculum for Reiki training in order to ensure consistency and good business practices among Reiki pratitioners who chose voluntarily to self-regulate. This book was written, in part, so that those whose studies did not provide sufficient training to meet the National Occupational Standards (NOC) developed as a part of this initiative would have a resource to turn to. The manual is designed to address the needs of both teachers and students of Reiki training, as well as practitioners who just want to round out their Reiki knowledge.

Information is presented following the progression of a typical Reiki student, including theory and practice for levels 1 and 2, setting up professional practice, and becoming a Reiki Master. Each section addresses the needs of the practitioner as they may appear throughout a typical career, for instance, topics covered starting with Reiki 1 and ending with Reiki Master provide guidance about hand positions, an examination of the precepts, self protection, first aid, ethics, medical conditions and emergencies, running a business and maintaining professional standards and preparing for a teaching career.

Quest includes a comprehensive history of Reiki, acknowledging the differences in the narrative of Usui's life as told by Japanese and Western practitioners and she also takes care in delivery of information about Japanese ideas and practices because of the many nuances that cannot always be accounted for in translation.

Detailed, thorough, well-written, and orderly for all levels

A great introduction to Reiki, well-written and easy to understand. I reviewed a lot of books before teaching a recent Reiki 1 class, and this was the one I liked best out of the many now on the market. It's also helpful for those who take higher levels of Reiki, wish to build a Reiki Healing practice, or to teach Reiki. I was able to easily look up the general steps for giving an attunement, and also to brush up on my drawing of Dai-ko-myo.
This book has orderly and detailed information for all levels of Reiki study, written in a simple way that is easy to understand and digest. This seems to cover practical concepts of Reiki very well. I like that it does not get so esoteric as to lose beginners to the new age world. I feel like I could recommend this book to my Christian Mom or the Crystal Ashram Guru.

Just what I needed!

As a beginning (Level I) practitioner, this book was extrememly informative. I took the initial class, then felt like I was still 'not quite ready' to continue on. This book provided wonderful background and detail that I missed in the class. Also, it gave instruction on daily practice to build on my training. I will be taking Level II in the near future, and this book will be my companion throughout the journey.

The exploitation of animals is pervasive, entrenched, and horrific. In this book, the authors reject the idea that animal use is morally acceptable if we treat animals “humanely.” They reject the campaigns for “compassionate” exploitation promoted by virtually all large animal protection organizations. These campaigns, the authors argue, reinforce the notion that we can consume our way out of injustice and trade one form of exploitation for another. They are morally wrong and they are, as a practical matter, ineffective.

The central argument of this book is that we need a paradigm shift. We must see nonhuman animals as nonhuman persons.

This paradigm shift—this revolution of the heart—starts with our own veganism, not as some sort of “flexitarian lifestyle” issue, but as a basic, fundamental, and non-negotiable commitment to justice and fairness for nonhuman animals. Veganism, as a moral imperative, recognizes that we have no moral justification for using animals—however “humanely”—for our purposes. It continues with our daily efforts to educate others in creative, positive, and nonviolent ways about veganism—something that each of us can do if we want to. Every day, we have opportunities to educate family, friends, colleagues at work, and people whom we encounter in a store or on a bus. Is it easier to write a check to someone else than do the work ourselves? Of course it is. But it won’t work because the large advocacy organizations are not seeking to end animal exploitation; they are, by promoting the idea of “compassionate” animal use, seeking instead to make the public feel more comfortable about continuing to exploit animals.

Francione and Charlton, both attorneys and professors at Rutgers University School of Law, have the dual perspective of working on animal issues for 30 years, while developing the abolitionist theory of animal rights. In this book, they discuss six principles that make up the Abolitionist Approach:

I. Principle One: Abolitionists maintain that all sentient beings, human or nonhuman, have one right—the basic right not to be treated as the property of others.

II. Principle Two: Abolitionists maintain that our recognition of this one basic right means that we must abolish, and not merely regulate, institutionalized animal exploitation, and that abolitionists should not support welfare reform campaigns or single-issue campaigns.

III. Principle Three: Abolitionists maintain that veganism is a moral baseline and that creative, nonviolent vegan education must be the cornerstone of rational animal rights advocacy.

IV. Principle Four: The Abolitionist Approach links the moral status of nonhumans with sentience alone and not with any other cognitive characteristic; all sentient beings are equal for the purpose of not being used exclusively as a resource.

V. Principle Five: Abolitionists reject all forms of human discrimination, including racism, sexism, heterosexism, ageism, ableism, and classism—just as they reject speciesism.

VI. Principle Six: Abolitionists recognize the principle of nonviolence as a core principle of the animal rights movement.

On the bedrock of these six principles, Francione and Charlton maintain that we can end animal exploitation.

Are you ready to change the world?

Any person who slightly cares about animals, or any person who slightly cares about justice, must read this book. It is brilliantly simple and in this simplicity, it gives the formula of changing the world into a more peaceful and just place. This book is for everyone, and it perfectly matches with its claim that if the world will change, everyone will be a part of it. Just read the book, practice the first principle in your life and go vegan, and start being a part of the solution.

An essential read for anyone who cares about justice

A superbly lucid, comprehensive, and most hopeful book, detailing the principles that will help us to bring animal exploitation to an end. A must-read for anyone who cares about justice in general, and/or animal rights in particular, and an essential addition to any advocate's toolkit, along with _Eat Like You Care_ by the same authors.

And as a fellow academic, knowing what the academic publishing world is like (small print runs, exorbitant prices that all go back to cover the cost of production, but high stakes for publishing in any other format), I'm very grateful to Profs. Francione and Charlton for rowing against the current here and producing a book that is affordable and accessible.
