Inventing the Flat Earth: Columbus and Modern Historians, by Jeffrey Burton Russell

Neither Christopher Columbus, nor his contemporaries, believed the earth was flat. Yet this curious illusion persists today, firmly established with the help of the media, textbooks, teachers--even noted historians.

Inventing the Flat Earth is Jeffrey Burton Russell's attempt to set the record straight. He begins with a discussion of geographical knowledge in the Middle Ages, examining what Columbus and his contemporaries actually did believe, and then moves to a look at how the error was first propagated in the 1820s and 1830s--including how noted writers Washington Irving and Antoinne-Jean Letronne were among those responsible. He shows how later day historians followed these original mistakes, and how this snowball effect grew to outrageous proportions in the late nineteenth century, when Christians opposed to Darwinism were labelled as similar to Medieval Christians who (allegedly) thought the earth was flat. But perhaps the most intriguing focus of the book is the reason why we allow this error to persist. Do we prefer to languish in a comfortable and familiar error rather than exert the effort necessary to discover the truth? This uncomfortable question is engagingly answered, and includes a discussion about the implications of this for historical knowledge and scholarly honesty.

Old Myths Die Hard
By Nick Peters
Recently, I had a conversation at a store with a salesman who was telling me that people in the past believed the Earth was flat, which I raised disagreement with. Online, one can hear this as a common objection. Often it is treated as an axiom and with the idea that the church was teaching otherwise. Consider this quote from Ingersoll in his essay Individuality

It is a blessed thing that in every age some one has had individuality enough and courage enough to stand by his own convictions,—some one who had the grandeur to say his say. I believe it was Magellan who said, "The church says the earth is flat; but I have seen its shadow on the moon, and I have more confidence even in a shadow than in the church." On the prow of his ship were disobedience, defiance, scorn, and success.

A flat-earther is used to refer to someone today who is a fool and is going against the progress of science. It's certainly easy to write off people as believing this. I know in Elementary school and beyond I was taught that Columbus sailed around to demonstrate that the Earth was round and not flat. (Which even if that had been the case, considering he didn't circumnavigate the globe, he did not prove that anyway.

If only I had know about Russell's book back then.

Russell's book is incredibly short. You can easily read it in a couple of hours like I did. In doing so, you will have invested those hours well. Russell points out that after the time of Christ, there were only two people who really brought out the idea that the Earth was flat. How many followers did they get on that count? None. They were certainly the minority. Alas, these two are thought to be representative of the time as a whole, ignoring all the other evidence that indicates people knew it was round.

Now of course, it could be that this did not extend to the masses, but frankly, we have no real way of knowing that. I would wager that for most people who were working hard to put food on the table and care for their families, they did not really think about the shape of the Earth. In fact, if they had, well you just go and ask the local priest and the local priest will tell you what the fathers of the church have said and you'll hear that it's round.

Russell also shows how this fed into a false idea of a warfare between science and religion, started mainly by people like John Draper and Andrew Dickson White. In many cases, this because a round of a group of people quoting each other as their own authorities and thereby seeking to establish their case as if it was heavily documented. (Read new atheist literature today and not much has changed.)

While Russell's thesis is certainly correct and he goes into great detail to show a meeting Columbus had with officials never brought up the shape of the Earth and while his work is filled with scholarly notes, I would like to see future editions contain quotes within the text itself. What would most complete this book is to have a series of quotations from people in this time period on how the Earth was indeed spherical, such as Thomas Aquinas's in his Summa Theologica in the very first question.

Still, this is a valuable book to read on the controversy. I wish I'd had it in the past instead of just buying into what my teachers taught me.

In Christ,

DID NEARLY ALL EDUCATED PEOPLE IN COLUMBUS' TIME ACCEPT THE SPHERICITY OF THE EARTH?
By Steven H Propp
Jeffrey Burton Russell (born 1934) is an American historian and religious studies scholar, who is currently Professor Emeritus of History at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He has written many other books, such as Exposing Myths About Christianity: A Guide to Answering 145 Viral Lies and Legends, Satan: The Early Christian Tradition (Cornell Paperbacks), Witchcraft in the Middle Ages, etc.

He wrote in the Preface to this 1991 book, "The almost universal supposition that educated medieval people believed the earth to be flat puzzled me and struck me as dissonant when I was in elementary school, but I assumed that teacher knew best and shelved my doubts. By the time my children were in elementary school, they were learning the same mistake, and by that time I knew it was a falsehood. Most of the undergraduates I have taught have received the same misinformation... The Flat Earth error is firmly fixed in our minds; I hope this little book will do a little to help dislodge it." (Pg. xiii) He adds, "By the time Copernicus had revolutionized the way people viewed the planets---as revolving around the sun rather the earth---the seed of the Flat Earth had been planted, but it did not grow to choke the truth until much later. When did it triumph and why? Who was responsible? There are the main questions of this book." (Pg. 5)

He points out, "Of the objections posed to Columbus, none involved questioning sphericity... the opponents... argued that the circumference of the earth was too great and the distance too far to allow a successful western passage. They rightly feared that life and treasure might be squandered on an impossibly long voyage... The committee's doubts were understandable, for Columbus has cooked his own arguments... Columbus needed to persuade Ferdinand and Isabella that the journey across the ocean sea was not impossibly long, and to do that he needed to reduce two things: the number of degrees occupied by the empty sea, and the distance between degrees. (Pg. 8-9)

He notes, "The Greeks' knowledge of the earth's roundness has never been disputed by any serious writers. The earliest Greek philosophers were vague, but 'after the fifth century no Greek writer of any repute' thought of the earth as anything but round... Pythagoras... Parmenides... Plato... Aristotle... Euclid... Aristarchus... and Archimedes ... all took the round view." (Pg. 24)

So where did the Flat Earth myth come from? One major source was Anglican priest William Whewell, who "pointed to the culprits of Lacantius and Cosmas Indicopleusustes as evidence of a medieval belief in a flat earth, and virtually every subsequent historian imitated him---they could find few other examples." (Pg. 31) Another source was John William Draper's book, History of the Conflict Between Religion and Science. Russell observes, "Draper might not have been so successful had it not been for the emergence of the controversy over evolution and the 'descent of man.' This controversy seemed to Draper and his colleagues to be another major battle in the supposedly ancient 'war between religion and science.'" (Pg. 41)

There was also Andrew Dickson White's A History of the Warfare of Science With Theology in Christendom; Russell comments: "White's efforts to construct a new Christianity based on that 'higher religious spirit' were doomed, for scientific realists insisted that all truth was scientific and that there was no room for revelation, while traditional Christians insisted that if Scripture and tradition were dismissed, Christianity was left with no intellectual basis. By the time White reinforced Draper and Whewell, the Flat Earth Error had grown to a stature that entirely dwarfed the historical reality." (Pg. 42-43)

He observes, "Where Protestants wished to darken the Middle Ages in order to discredit the papacy, Humanists such as Erasmus wished to restore the purity of the early church, which coincided with the late classical age of the early Roman Empire. Both the Protestants and the Humanists, demanding the restoration of a brilliant past, needed to posit a decline... The brighter the Humanists were to shine, the darker the preceding ages had to be painted. Petrarch... invented the term 'Dark Ages' about 1340... This left a growing sense that between the Good Classics and the Good Renaissance was a dark period of illegitimate authority in church and state and ignorance of arts and philosophy..." (Pg. 65-66)

He concludes, "The assumption of the superiority of 'our' views to that of older cultures is the most stubborn remaining variety of ethnocentrism. If we were not so ethnocentrically convinced of the ignorance of stupidity of the Middle Ages, we would not fall into the Flat Error. And we would not remain in it were we not afraid of the conceptual shock of realizing that our closest held assumptions are precarious. The hope that we are making progress toward a goal... leads us to undervalue the past in order to convince ourselves of the superiority of the present." (Pg. 76)

This is an extremely informative book, that should be considered "must reading" for anyone who wants to learn more about the history of ideas---and their misrepresentations.

Review
It is a disturbing story how the government at all costs went out of the way to cover up Netaji's mysterious disappearance and more shocking is the revelation that INA 's treasure gold was melted and credited to nehru's personal account.

Read the book and you will find many similarities regarding cover up then and cover up now (2G, Coalgate, Vadragate!!!).... --Parag Kumthekar

Deciphering Bose Mystery...
By Sreejith Panickar
There are many books around on the Subhas Bose mystery, but Anuj Dhar's "India's Biggest Cover-up" stands out from the rest, due to three reasons. One; it is new. The author weeds out fables from the mystery and delves deep into the subject. Two; his premises are backed by logic, findings by evidences, and writing by reason. He also presents an action plan to resolve the mystery, something which Shivraj Patil `advisedly' omitted in his ATR (Action Taken Report) on the Mukherjee commission report. Three; the very title of the book! Dhar takes the lid off the longstanding plane crash myth and in doing so, calls a spade a spade. He uncloaks some of the shoddy national leaders and officials who have been lying to the nation to lead us to believe that Bose was killed long back in a plane crash. Not surprisingly, the list includes India's first Prime Minister and even the would-be President! I suppose that justifies the book title.

The book is a chronicle of different events in the mystery organised meaningfully into different chapters. Generally, such a work based on the past can be dreary but this one makes the reading as easy and engaging as it can be. Past and present day events are skilfully ran up together as in a thriller. To start with, Dhar flails the plane crash theory on its head by laying out evidences against it one after another. I don't think there would be too many punters for the plane crash story after reading the book.

Rather than being an author, Dhar assumes the role of a moderator, considering different views and opinions in great detail. He does not assent to the popular fabrications to drive home his point. All of the Bose mystery stories we have heard in the past were an admixture of facts and myths. But Dhar demonstrates the highest level of self-worth and truthfulness to his work by rebuffing `manipulated proof' that doesn't appear cooked up on the first look. His sieve separates the believable part from the confusing claims, evident from his explanation - against popular belief - that the monk seen by Nehru's bier was not Bose.

Justice Mukherjee only recommended the government to probe the Russian connection of the mystery. But here is a man who has taken the trouble to follow Bose's trail and boy, hasn't he got fantastic results! Dhar even springs a surprise by showing the photograph of a high profile meeting of 1960s attended by a `Bose look-alike', who is yet to be identified! Regarding the Bhagwanji angle, he presents the stories told by the baba disciples and tries to find matches from historical events. He displays great poise in dealing with beliefs about Bhagwanji, without going overboard.

Dhar is not just an author, but a researcher in true sense; and his work is not just a book, but a well compiled piece of history. Dhar also exposes a good mound of documents based on which he deduces his views, all logical and factual. Dhar is no Pied Piper; instead, he assists the readers to use their own common sense to draw conclusions. This is where the book excels. Now the most important question - how would I rate this book? I can say with confidence that in terms of `completeness', only one thing would contain more details on the Bose mystery - the quarantined information lying in our government archives. In one's avidity for more information on the Bose mystery, "India's Biggest Cover-up" would remain `the best vade mecum' on the subject. And I am sure every reader would thirstily long for the day the vaulted truth comes out in public domain.

A book with many information to consider
By KDutta
This is an interesting book. It has many information with some copies of authentic letters included. The importance of the book to me was those letters. At many places I did differ with the author's interpretation. But at the same time it helped me to arrive at my own conclusion. The author took a very negative position with respect to Jawaharlal Nehru. The letters of Nehru did not give me any impression that he was part of some conspiracies against Netaji. The decision for not allowing/opposing Shah Nawaz Commission's visit to Taiwan , I viewed it as consistent with that time's ( 1950s) situation. India had a Kashmir problem since Aug 15, 1947. Probably, Nehru thought that it was not advisable to annoy Red China. In fact, I felt based on the facts presented in the book, Bidhan Roy, Subimal Dutt, and bunch of other Bengalis , including some family members of Netaji were part of "such" conspiracy, if there was any. Both in front of the Shah Nawaz and Khosla commission, many Bengalis who otherwise pretended to have great respect for Netaji played dubious roles. Shame! The role of respected B. C Roy was particularly shameful. It seemed to me that Netaji had many enemies as did Tagore or Vivekanada. We Bengalis are in a sense, coward, greedy, lazy, mean-minded, big-talk-little-action, quarrelsome and jealous bunch of people. That is why after the independence we lost our place and position we used to have in pre-independence India.

The book helped me to understand clearly several things:
1. Netaji didn't die of air crash

2. Netaji was a selfless man. He never put his interest above India's interest. He was not merely a freedom fighter. He was a true worshiper of mother India and her people-- without any consideration of cast , religion, or creed. To him India was above anything and nothing was worth more than the nation.

3. He was above any hate and self ambition. When Kamala Nehru was unwell and was sent to Vienna with daughter Indira Gandhi (nee Nehru), it was Subash Bose received them at Vienna and took good care of them. Netaji was a man of big heart!!! His training came from the Vedas and in true sense of Tantra through Ramakrishna Paramahansa and Swami Vivekanada.

4. He was a fearless man and was a "Joddha Sanyasi"--- Warrior Saint.

Many things we will have to leave for history to judge. Unfortunately, this will be one such event. Historians will argue and debate and, it seems to me, will never be able to come to any conclusion. Also, before we embark on allegation of any conspiracy let's step back and ask--- what Netaji would have wanted? It seems to me, from the facts presented in the book, he really wanted to fade away and disappear with no one trying to find him. That is very clear from all the facts presented in the book. In that case, conspiracy or not, really does not matter.

Having said that, few things should be done to stop some unnecessary controversies and blame games. I am saying this to opine on few suggestions made in the book as next steps.

1. There should be a DNA test or whatever test is possible to find out the truth of the ashes kept in the Renkoji temple. If it is of Netaji's, the grateful nation should do the needful and it also will put to rest all chattering including blame games. With DNA technology improving such test should be now possible.

2. If ashes are not of Netaji's , Govt. of India should let some responsible honest ( assuming that there are some left in India)people to see all classified files on Netaji and make a determination. There should be short report out stating the facts and at the same time not implicate anyone in order to avoid a possible national unrest. We need to move on and at the same time find all facts. Let's not have another useless commission serving no purpose.

3. All the letters of Gumnami Baba of Faizabad and of Netaji should be preserved. Science one day may come up with a technology that may help us to find truth using those letters.

I hope Mission Netaji work towards those goals.

The book is a must read for all those who would like to know more about Netaji. It is a unique work and should be preserved for generations to read. However, while reading this book reader should try to form his/her own opinion without prejudice using many wonderful facts presented. I commend the author for presenting us with many useful facts. This is no doubt the best book I have ever read on Netaji.

Well researched, great read
By Bhandari
I must say this book is one of the best I read and purchased so far.For all you history and politics buff and have a keen interest in reading about India's independence, - a must read.
To be honest I couldn't put down this book since I started reading it.. It is well reasearched and quotes original facts and then Author's take on those facts but does not stop you from making your own analysis. Definitely written with an open mind to unravel the mystery about the late years of Shri Subhas Bose.Once you read through the book, you will realize that the Author and his team have done a huge task of reasearching through so many sources of information in so many countries and had to face red tape from their own government.
While growing up we always read about Shri Subhas Bose and his struggle for independence , but somehow every text ended abruptly with a line of crash theory and no commentary after that, no discussion. So he remained a mystery to all of us..untill now.Anuj Dhar and his team has done a superb job by bringing us the pieces of the gigantic puzzle , which otherwise was scattered across the globe..Puzzle is still not solved yet but you can see the picture is emerging..
Don't take my word, please read the book or try the sample if you are on kindle.. you will be hooked.

The Count of Monte Cristo[Illustrated], by Alexandre Dumas

• The book includes 10 unique illustrations that are relevant to its content.
Monte Cristo had two goals- to reward those who were kind to him and his aging father, and to punish those responsible for his imprisonment and suffering. For the latter, he plans slow and painful punishment. To have spent fourteen years barely subsisting in a dungeon demands cruel and prolonged castigation. Setting: The Count of Monte Cristo is set with in the nineteenth century of France in large and populous cities. This was a time of great disruption. There was confusion all over the land in regards to who led France, King Louis or Napoleon. The citizens of France became divided by the two ruling parties. Royalists and the Bonapartist cut at each others throats in order to declare that their ruler was supreme. This situation has a profound effect on the events of the story. Dantes' enemies used the rivalry between the two parties in order to convince the Royalists that Edmond is a Bonapartist, therefore it is the basis for his arrest and inevitable captivity in the Chateau D'If.. Basic Plot: The Count of Monte Cristo is a story about a sailor, Edmond Dantes, who was betrayed during the prime of his life and career by the jealousy of his friends. His shipmate, Danglars, coveted his designation as the captain of the mighty Pharon. Ferdinand Mondego wished to wed Mercedes, who was affianced to Edmond. Danglars and Ferdinand wrote a letter accusing Edmond of carrying a letter from Elba to the Bonapartist committee in Paris. Caderousse, a neighbor, learned of the plot but kept silent. On his wedding day Edmond was arrested and taken before a deputy named Villefort, a political apostate, who, to protect himself, had Edmond secretly imprisoned in the deepest dungeons of the Chateau D'If. There Dantes' incarceration was secured by the plotting of his enemies outside the prison, particularly towards Villefort, who wished to cover up his own father's connections with the Bonapartists. Dantes suffered for fourteen grueling years. While in prison, he was determined to escape and began digging a tunnel in hopes that it would lead to freedom. During this exercise, he met an elderly inmate named Abbe Faria whose attempt to dig his way to his salvation had led him only to Edmond's cell. The two meet daily and an incredible relationship flourished. The old man taught Edmond history, mathematics, and languages. In Edmond's fourteenth year, Faria became mortally ill. The wise elder told Edmond where to find a massive buried fortune. When Faria finally did die, his body was placed in a burial sac. Edmond seized the opportunity of escaping and replaced Faria's corpse with himself. Jailers threw the sack into the sea which allowed Dantes to escape. He is rescued by a passing ship which gives him a position on the boat. After paying homage for the noble act, Dantes recovered the buried treasure and became extremely wealthy. He returned as the mysterious Count of Monte Cristo and dazzled all of Paris with his extreme wealth and social graces and also he ingeniously managed to be introduced to the cream of French society, among who he goes unrecognized. But, Monte Cristo, in contrariety, recognized all of his enemies, which now are all powerful and influential men. Therefore, he was slowly plotting the ruin of the four men who had caused him to be sent to the Chateau D'If. Ferdinand had married Mercedes and was now the Count de Morcef. Monte Cristo released information to the press that proved that Morcef is a traitor, and Morcef is ruined socially. Then Monte Cristo destroyed Morcef's relationship with his family, whom he adored. When they leave him, he was so distraught that he committed suicide. To revenge himself on Caderousse, Monte Cristo easily trapped Caderousse.

ROBIN BUSS's TRANSLATION from PENGUIN CLASSICS
By J. Cooper
This review is for those who've already decided they want to read The Count of Monte Cristo (you won't regret it!), and don't know which version to get.

Short answer: see review title, duh!

The Count of Monte Cristo is my favorite book, and I've read several translations, both abridged and unabridged.

TRANSLATION
The Buss translation is the most modern, and reads most fluidly. A quick example comparing this translation with the one found on Project Gutenberg:

PG - His wife visited for him, and this was the received thing in the world, where the weighty and multifarious occupations of the magistrate were accepted as an excuse for what was really only calculated pride...

BUSS - His wife visited on his behalf; this was accepted in society, where it was attributed to the amount and gravity of the lawyer's business -- when it was, in reality, deliberate arrogance...

Buss's work reads like the book was written in English. The two or so times that the work is nearly untranslatable, Buss makes a footnote about it (eg, an insinuated insult using the formal "vous" instead of the familiar "tu"). Other translations just skip the subtlety. The most common translation out there (uncredited in my version) reads like a swamp. Trust me, get Buss.

ABRIDGED V UNABRIDGED
Abridged versions of this book rarely say "abridged." You can tell by the size: abridged is 500-700 pages, unabridged is 1200-1400 pages. Go for the unabridged.

The abridged version is VERY confusing! Pruning 1200 pages down to 600 leaves a lot of plot on the cutting room floor. Suddenly, arriving at dinner are 4 new characters; it's very tiring to try to keep up with the hole-ridden story of the abridged versions. And you know where the holes are? Publishers "clean up" the book by omitting the affairs, illegitimate children, homosexuality, hashish trips, etc.

As an added bonus in the Penguin Classics edition, there's a wonderful appendix bursting with footnotes to explain all the 19th century references, and a quick guide to the rise and fall of Napoleon (crucial to the politics in the story).

Hope this helps. Get the book and start reading!

Absolutely the best book ever
By Book lover
This book is an example of perfect fiction writing. Its length is 5 times the average book and it still was not long enough! The story, the characters, the settings and the emotions enthralled me for days. I could not put it down. I was living the book as it took me to France, the mediterranean, Italy and every home, cave and mode of transportation detailed in exemplary fashion by Dumas. Without giving away the intrigue... This book is the story of a wronged young sailor and follows his life as he is imprisoned due to the actions of 3 jealous men. He lives in prison for an extended period of time, meeting a man who gives him hope and a life beyond his dreams. He escapes the horrid dungeon and seeks revenge on the 3 men who took away everything he ever hoped for. This book is amazing, it will not disappoint anyone. I cannot believe I did not read it before. Thank you Kindle for allowing me the pleasure of reading this book for free, however, it is worth paying for and sharing with anyone who loves to read.

A gripping tale of love and revenge
By PurpleKat
Warning: Do NOT pick this book up and start it if you have something that you need to do in the next day or three. You won't be able to put the book down, or if you do, you'll move zombielike through your everyday tasks while your mind stays with the adventures of Edmund Dantes.
The Count of Monte Cristo is a delicious book, full of intrigue, great fight scenes, love, passion, and witty social satire. Dumas has a wonderful grasp of human nature and a talent for rendering all the follies of man in delightful, snappy prose. I immediately recognized people that I know (yes, even myself) in his vivid characters, which made the book all the more engaging to me.
Some people might be put off by the size of the book -- it's a pretty hefty volume -- an tempted to buy the abridged version. Don't! I've heard from people who've read both versions that the abridged version is a pathetic, washed out shadow of the full novel. At any rate, as thick and impossibly long as The Count of Monte Cristo may seem when you open it for the first time, you'll feel as though it's far too short by the time you get to the last page.

Dumb Luck: A Novel

Banned in Vietnam until 1986, Dumb Luck--by the controversial and influential Vietnamese writer Vu Trong Phung--is a bitter satire of the rage for modernization in Vietnam during the late colonial era. First published in Hanoi during 1936, it follows the absurd and unexpected rise within colonial society of a street-smart vagabond named Red-haired Xuan. As it charts Xuan's fantastic social ascent, the novel provides a panoramic view of late colonial urban social order, from the filthy sidewalks of Hanoi's old commercial quarter to the gaudy mansions of the emergent Francophile northern upper classes. The transformation of traditional Vietnamese class and gender relations triggered by the growth of colonial capitalism represents a major theme of the novel.
Dumb Luck is the first translation of a major work by Vu Trong Phung, arguably the greatest Vietnamese writer of the twentieth century. The novel's clever plot, richly drawn characters and humorous tone and its preoccupation with sex, fashion and capitalism will appeal to a wide audience. It will appeal to students and scholars of Vietnam, comparative literature, colonial and postcolonial studies, and Southeast Asian civilization.
Vu Trong Phung died in Hanoi, in 1939 at the age of twenty-seven. He is the author of at least eight novels, seven plays, and several other works of fiction in addition to Dumb Luck.
Peter Zinoman is Associate Professor of Southeast Asian History, University of California, Berkeley. Nguyen Nguyet Cam is Vietnamese Language Instructor, University of California, Berkeley.

Best novel I have read for class
By Joseph M. Gates
I was assigned this novel for a Vietnamese history class; I would not have even heard of it otherwise.

This novel is excellent. The writing style, translated from 1930's Vietnamese, is humourous, witty, and fast-paced. The luck, charisma, and quick thinking of Red-Haired Xuan is hilarious, and the plot is worthy of the best modern comedy movies (particularly British ones).

I have no clue how you would find out about this novel, but if you do, you should read it. It had me laughing out loud, and I am not a fan of historical or foreign novels. Considering that this novel is 70 years old and from a totally different language, it must be a masterpiece if to still be so good.

Timeless
By M. Bolthouse
In addition to offering great historical and cultural perspective for anyone interested in the "American War" - the Vietnam War - and previous history...this book is just funny.

It is an intelligent, witty, insightful book, and yet is somehow familiar...almost 'quaint' - with characters who are endearing, comfortable and delightful even to an American reader many decades later.

Can a state empower its citizens by classifying them? Or do reservation policies reinforce the very categories they are meant to eradicate? Indian reservation policies on government jobs, legislative seats and university admissions for disadvantaged groups, like affirmative action policies elsewhere, are based on the premise that recognizing group distinctions in society is necessary to subvert these distinctions. Yet the official identification of eligible groups has unintended side-effects on identity politics. Bridging theories which emphasize the fluidity of identities and those which highlight the utility of group-based mobilizations and policies, this book exposes didactic enforcement of categorizations, while recognizing the social and political gains facilitated by group-based strategies.
