Not too keen on this

I don't know if it was the class or the text that made me dislike this subject. This subject seems to be in place because people are forgetting how to be professional and writing memos with "instant messenger" style grammar. Maybe this text book will help the new generation become more professional, or maybe it was a complete waste of my money.

This is a "Must Have" text. If your course requires this text, don't rent it. Definitely buy it. The resources alone are worth the price.

Valuable content for the business student, educator, or communication major. Real tips such as writing a letter, responding to negative situations such as downsizing, press releases, web communication, social media, and so much more. Excellent Condition, Came in a Timely Manner

I ordered two copies of this book on a Monday and by Thursday the box containing them was on my doorstep. I skimmed through the pages, and did not see any writing or highlighting despite the "used" condition. The only evidence that the books may have been used before is some very light marks on the cover and a slight bending of the bottom right corner. The price was certainly right as well -- in my school's bookstore, the books were over $160 apiece, and the used copies here were just about $20 each. Great price, great condition, and great shipping time. I definitely would recommend getting the book on Amazon.

Even in the Middle Ages, the author suggests, there was little sentimentality about the poor - other than for those who chose to be so - and charity was valued as a way of excusing what was kept. Then the poor had functions, as the means of securing divine salvation through the giving of alms, and as contractors who would pray for their benefactors. But with the economic crises that afflicted Europe in the 16th century, mass poverty came to be seen as harmful, dangerous and a source of instability: the poor must be forbidden to beg and, lest they stole, provided with work. Most of the principles of modern poor relief were now formulated, in parishes, cities and nationally. Few of these arrangements succeeded for long. The scale of poverty was increasing: first through rural change in which farmers became landless labourers; then through industrial change when craftsmen lost their status and independence and took uncertain employment in large industries. If absolute poverty was less evident, the gap between rich and poor had become more manifest. It is here, Dr Geremek shows, that the utopian ideals of socialism were born. Unrest could be contained in state welfare schemes, or it could be manipulated into revolution, and the poor once more enslaved - this time in the name of their own interests. This book shows how central the role of poverty has been throughout the history of Europe. It casts a fresh perspective on the actions of individuals, groups and nations, and on the underlying nature of the greatest social changes the continent has experienced.

About the Author
Bronislaw Geremek was lecturer at the Sorbonne (1960-1965) were he also directed the Centre for Polish Civilization until 1966. In 1965 he was appointed head of the Research Unit on the History of Medieval Culture at the Polish Academy of Sciences. For the next twenty years he was closely involved in dissident circles in Poland, taking a central role in the founding of the Solidarity trade union in Gdansk in the early 1980s. Professor Geremek still plays an important role in Poland's politics while now continuing his teaching and research both in Warsaw and in Paris.

I normally don't write reviews this often but, This book is definitely helpful and while I order the hard cover edition. I really enjoy how this product is presented. I haven't read through yet but I heard many good things about Ron Tiner, A fellow artist who's in the industry recommended me this book. I'm on the side of the technical artist and I'm not usually good at drawing from mind but always need photo reference to get started and boost my ideas.

I recommend to check this book out. The knowledge and content is invaluable for those who are an artist with a weak imagination. Aleast thats what I consider myself.

Book, worthy of note.

Not exactly what I expected, but a interesting book nonetheless.

I especially enjoyed the first half of the book(and it was the reason I got it).
This is not a clean cut "how to" book, this is not a beginner's book either.

It is general guide, from the viewpoint of a veteran British illustrator, for those who already know how to handle a pencil.

As I said before, an interesting book.

The third edition of Nightwatch continues its tradition of being the best handbook for the beginning astronomer. Terence Dickinson covers all the problems beginners face, starting with the fact that the night sky does not look the way a modern city-dweller expects. He discusses light pollution, how to choose binoculars and telescopes, how to pronounce the names of stars and constellations, telescope mounts, averted vision, and why the harvest moon looks especially bright. Most of the lovely photographs in the book were taken by amateurs, which gives the section on astrophotography a particularly inspirational gleam.

Dickinson's star charts are very handy, each covering a reasonable field of view and mapping the most interesting amateur objects. He gives good advice for planet watching, which he notes "is one of the few astronomical activities that can be conducted almost as well from the city as from dark rural locations."

spiral binding rendered useless

I won't add anything about the book itself to the already great reviews written by others here, my reason for posting this review is to say that the way that the book is now bound takes away all the advantages of the book being spiral bound. The cover on the edition that I received is a hard cover with a hard spine on the book that will not permit you folding the book over onto itself without damaging the hardcover and its spine.

It's ironic because in the book, the author writes a line, which i'll paraphrase here, that you can take this book out into the field and use the star maps by folding the book open and holding it up so that you can search for constellations and stars, but now, with this current edition's binding, you can't do this. I am thinking of cutting the spine down the middle so that i can fold the book over, because the charts and starmaps really would be useful. The other solution is just to leave the book undamaged and buy a separate star finder, and leave this book at home when out stargazing.

Good introduction into the night sky and the tools you need to do so especially for beginners

For me as a beginner not having touched the subject for at least 27 years, this book was a very good introduction to the night sky. I was however surprised, that the included winter sky chart did not show the constellation where Mars can be found in January 2017. It is tabulated that the planet can be seen in the constellation Aquarius. When I checked the constellation chart for winter, I could not see any drawing of Aquarius nor a label for the constellation. If I would not have know that the Pisces are close to the Aquarius, I would not have found the place in the sky where Mars can be found. The Aquarius constellation is not named specifically in the winter charts, the Pisces are not drawn but labeled. The fact that not all constellations are depicted or labelled on the charts gives a better overview and a better introduction to the beginner avoiding too much confusion with too many constellations.
Besides the mentioned little inconsistency the book is really thought through and follows a clear line. Thank you for bringing all this knowledge in such a compiled form to the public!

Great Introductory Guide to Backyard Astronomy!

As the number one selling amateur astronomy book in the world (and here on Amazon), I think most would buy this holding fairly high expectations. And I am happy to report that for the most part, the book lives up to the hype. It provides an easily accessible framework based on the constellations of the Big Dipper (Ursa Major) and Orion for then orienting and helping any amateur astronomer to get out viewing under the stars. The chapters are logically laid out from understanding the scale of the universe to the layout of the constellations to picking a first telescope to the observation of major celestial sights. Mr Dickinson does a great job of including some great inserts on major star names and their origins, future upcoming lunar and solar eclipses and detailed data on how to view the planets. Perhaps my favorite illustration of the book is the one showing the constellations of the Zodiac laid out in the correct direction relative to the Milky Way galaxy. There are also a great many detailed star charts available in the book which will help any northern hemisphere owner achieve proper orientation to the night sky. The book is also very good as discussing amateur astronomy from several points of view, including naked eye observation, binocular viewing and for those owning telescopes.

At about 190 pages, the book can easily be read over the period of a week or so with the observer then coming back frequently to use the star charts. The only caveat I can think of is that the book is perhaps not as detailed as some gear heads and more serious observers might hope for. As a complete newbie when I purchased the book, I found every chapter insightful but now that I have more experience, I would also recommend interested readers who want more meat to take a look at another book by Dickinson, 'The Backyard Astronomer's Guide'. BAG as it is known to astronomers is basically a more detailed version of Nightwatch. It has some of the basic detail of Nightwatch but with a great deal of depth that Nightwatch does not have (especially concerning telescope gear and equipment) plus many new topics. Nightwatch does have many nice sky maps which BAG does not. Basically if you wish to get into night sky viewing occasionally or without equipment, or with binoculars or a small cheaper telescope, then Nightwatch is your best bet. However, if you are pretty sure that celestial viewing is going to be a major hobby for you and you crave more detail, then I recommend ordering Nightwatch and the BAG book together.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book and am still using the star charts during observations. There is no wasted space in the book and it will certainly help out any new backyard astronomer. Easily five stars!

Yikes! That Was Scary!

The title of this book tells the reader that the sisters had a very close call on this adventure. They were nude as they always are wherever they go. It is never on a dare but this time they came very close to being discovered by the park ranger while they were very naked and vulnerable. Fortunately, Jane and Jem moved silently as cats and then froze on top of each other when they were less than 30 feet from being discovered by the authorities which could have landed them in jail. You'll feel the fear and concern as you read, but don't worry, the story has a happy ending. Enjoy!

In order to follow examples laid out in this book, we have been trying to set up the backend Oracle database per instructions provided in this book on pages 29-30. However, the scripts do not fully work. First, they rely on a package called UTILS that is not included with the book. We were able to generate it in SQL Developer after some research. Second, the scripts make use of a user defined function called udfBuildISO8601Date, which again was not provided. Finally, character set conversion errors occur when attempting to create two of the views from the scripts. Perhaps, some nonstandard database settings are needed to make the scripts run without errors. I would appreciate if the publisher could provide updated SQL scripts for download on the PACKT web site.

The book cover all the required aspects to starts with MicroStrategy very Fast and give you opportunity to avoid hundreds of mistakes during the first real project.

This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn more about MicroStrategy it's ecosystem. It explains the development, administration and even the integration with Big Data. I hardly recommend it if you need to learn more about BI and MicroStrategy.

About the Author

Carl Hart is an associate professor in the departments of psychology and psychiatry at Columbia University. He is also a research scientist in the Division of Substance Abuse at the New York State Psychiatric Institute; a member of the National Advisory Council on Drug Abuse; and on the board of directors of the College on Problems of Drug Dependence and the Drug Policy Alliance. A native of Miami, Florida, he lives in New York City.

Nuanced Book about the Intersection of Drugs and Environment

Disclaimer: I know Dr. Hart and had heard some of his story and have been exposed to his research before reading this book. That said, I started reading when it hit my Kindle and didn't put it down until I finished (for those fellow e-readers, like myself, I noticed no formatting issues as you sometimes see with kindle books). I found Dr. Hart's book to be utterly compelling and a magnificent achievement of the sort I have never read before in a "pop" psychology book. He manages to both make the neuroscience easily understandable, and uses he own autobiography to help support the argument prompted by his research findings. I have never seen an academic lay himself so bare, tenure or not. In doing so, Dr. Hart underscores his argument that drugs are not the primary problem in poor and/or minority communities. It is lack of many things: opportunity, personal decision making, family support, luck. Drugs are an issue, but this is due to the interaction of drugs with the above factors for most people (addiction is a different story, and Hart addresses that). The discussion of the similar depiction (by researchers, the government, and the media) of various drugs over the years as being instantly addictive and creating a culture of violence due to the nature of the drug's chemistry (whether it be cocaine, crack, or meth) was very powerful. Dr. Hart believed this himself until his research showed him that people were not mindless, poor decision makers only out for the next high. Using the lens provided by his research findings, he saw his own past and the pasts of the people he knew growing up in a different light. Dr. Hart's argument is very nuanced and makes it clear that the war on drugs is not only untenable from a "success" perspective, it is also disproportionately damaging to people from disadvantaged populations. This war and the subsequent criminalization of people takes even more opportunity for the future away.

I see the reviews of this book are polarized. People either love it or hate it. What that should tell potential readers, even if they want to dismiss every word of this review, is that this is not a book to be missed. The last thing you will be is bored. But read it carefully. I saw no glorifying of drugs, nor the rantings of a drug advocate. Rather, Dr. Hart suggests that being pro/anti drugs outside of the situational context is too simple a mindset.

Revolutionary work with shocking results. An absolute must read.

Revolutionary scientific research done by a very skilled and interesting researcher. Dr. Hart's background and his rise to prominence are well documented and make fascinating reading. What is better is his approach to a difficult problem (substance use/abuse and addiction) and his well designed studies that had shocking results. Dr. Hart's results refute long established theories and paradigms that have been the basis for destructive policies related to substance use. His methodology meets the highest standards his conclusions well supported.

Absolute essential reading for anyone in the field of addiction studies, and for those tasked with creating or reforming current ineffective and destructive drug policy. Highly recommended for anyone just interested in a subject which is becoming a major issue in our communities.

Enlightening Expose of Drug Use

If you think you understand the dynamics of drug use in the United States, check it out in this book. Carl Hart changed my mind about the reasons for incarceration and possession. I wish every media person and politician would read this book. Dr. Hart helped me see that criminalization of drug possession is a blight on the United States.
