Worship

Worship is a strong and important arm of the church. It helps reach down to the core of a person as a tool that touches the heart of each parishioner. It's a call to action. But music is in an ever changing cycle. How do you choose the songs that will reach the people and when do you retire old ones? Are the classics always best, or is contemporary music ruining our culture? These are just a few of the questions discussed in this handy guide.

This product does what it promises - helps create a simple worship planning process by identifying key ideas and concepts. I had been on my own journey of this type of thinking lately -- this book merely gave me language and focus and process to approach the ever broadening and often challenging area of planning services for an evangelical church.

Incredible resource for worship leaders

Being a relatively new worship leader, I've been slowly developing my own "song cycle system" through trial and error. Thankfully, Jon has produced an excellent, well-developed, and time-tested approach to worship set list selection and rotation. My guess is that even seasoned worship leaders will gain useful insights from Jon's system.

I love Jon's conversational writing style, and I even laughed aloud a few times due to his fun anecdotes. There is a lot of meat packed into this guide - Jon doesn't just throw his system at you and tell you how to implement it. Instead he deliberately highlights the need for such a system and thoroughly explains each component.

As I write this review, I have all my binders of chord charts out and strewn across the floor as I eagerly begin to implement the SongCycle.

I look forward to seeing how the Lord will use it and pray that our worship time is enriched as a result.

Outstanding

I just received my copy today and the drawings are outstanding. There are 44 beautifully drawn angels printed on a fairly heavy paper that is similar to that in the Johanna Basford books, much better than the paper in the Creative Haven books (not knocking the Creative Haven series, as I have several of them and am quite satisfied with their quality). The cover illustration is a good representation of the size and level of detail included in the book.

Opposite each drawing is a beautifully framed verse or message from your angels, suitable for framing itself if you so desire. However, the pages are double-sided, so you will have to decide which side of the page you want to frame--message or angel.

I was very happy to discover that all pages are perforated for easy removal which I think makes it easier to work on a drawing. None of the drawings disappear into the binding. Most of the angels could easily be cut out of the page after completion and used as part of a collage. The only problem I see is deciding which drawing to complete first!

If you love angels you will love this book!

Wonderful designs, nicely published

I am very picky when it comes to coloring books and don't buy a whole lot, despite being a dedicated colorists, especially when they cost more than $6 or so. I made an exception with this book because I am familiar with Doreen Virtue and the books she has been publishing for a while. She didn't do the illustrations, she wrote the messages, Norma J. Burnell did them, but they are fantastic. From what I gather by conducting research, Norma is a very accomplished artist.

The average book has 31 designs, this one has over 40. (the book has 96 pages in all, but the designs are single sided). I was pleasantly surprised at the paper thickness and quality because books that have more designs are usually cheaping out on paper. This one did not. The angels are on one side of the page, and the backsides have inspiring messages on them. Pages are perforated for easy removal.

If there is one thing that I find a bit difficult is that a lot of the designs fade into the paper. However, I am not deducting points for that. While my personal preference would be for full designs, not fade-outs, that doesn't mean others would not like this. I've used colored pencils, markers and gel pens, and they all work wonderfully with this book.

Love it as i did with her fairies one. The angles are beautiful and also the messages are right on!!!! I just wish the bodies had been a bit smaller and finished. complete with legs and feet, the bottom half is just left off. but, I still love this book and love coloring in it and watching the Angels come to life! you will love this book if you enjoy coloring Angels as i do. Love the way their faces are, where you can color the eyes and lips. so real. not disappointed here at all

My mid-life crisis came early; I was only 23 when I began pondering the purpose of my life. Desperately unhappy with where I was, and the future that I could see for myself, I made a crazy decision to sacrifice everything and follow my heart.

It took three years for my heart to speak, but when it did, the call was clear. I dropped out of university, said goodbye to friends and family, stuffed my life into a 25-litre backpack, and set off into the unknown.

What followed was a five year African adventure that carried me to places, and through experiences, that I could never have imagined in my wildest dreams.

About the Author
Philen Naidu is a spiritual adventure novelist, freelance reporter and humanitarian.

The moving "My Life My Africa"

"My Life My Africa" is a touching book of a man's soul searching journey. Philen Naidu shares his story of how his disillusionment with life lead him to give up everything he knew in his fist world existence and follow an instinct to travel into rural Africa. He encounters his own conditioning when faced with a culture and way of life so different to the one he'd grown up in and become accustomed to.

By reading this gripping story of one man, I found myself asking questions of my own life experience, and the way of life we are led to believe is the ultimate way to live. I yearn even more now to travel into Africa and experience for myself another philosophy of living that is more communal and focused on what really matters in life, like relationships.

"My Life My Africa" reads like watching a movie with its informal style. I felt like I was having a coffee with Philen as he went into story telling mode, sharing his emotions and self questioning, and reading from his actual journal. The realness of Philen's expression keeps you turning the pages, and wishing you were having that actual coffee to ask about aspects he doesn't go into detail about in the book.

For a refreshing look at how life keeps us questioning our values, I recommend "My Life My Africa" as a fantastic read of a real life story that I am sure will move you in some way, as it has moved me.

Some Adventure, but little else....

I got a free copy from the author with a request to review this book. The synopsis kindled my interest because it is not often I , as an Indian myself, find books of this type from people of Indian origin.

I would summarize the book briefly as follows: Naidu, a South African of Indian descent, at age 23, feels alienated by the lack of direction in his comfortable life in Johannesburg and decides to go to Zambia to 'find himself'. He lives there among the rural poor, wild hippos, rhinos and elephants and eventually ends up in the business of 'smuggling' goods across the border between S.Africa and Zambia. During this period, he is involved in a serious road accident that leaves him unconscious and in a coma. Finally, he regains consciousness and recovers to health 'miraculously'. In the process, he 'discovers' himself.

As I reached two-thirds into the book, it felt no different from the experiences of many backpackers. Still, there is some real adventure in Naidu's travels as he encounters a wild elephant in the forests where he camps, sleeps near a waterhole and wakes up in the morning in the company of wild hippos and so on. Later, he comes to know that there was a pride of seven lions in the area and elephants with their young ones. This is fantastic and real adventure. Unfortunately, I must say that this was the only thing that really stirred me in the book and that I wasn't excited about much else concerning his 'search'.

A bit of reflection made me realize that people coming from different socio-economic backgrounds would view Naidu's 'existential crisis' in substantially different ways. This is probably at the root of my reaction. Having come up from the lower rungs of 1960s India, it looked to me that Naidu's alienation was primarily due to an affluent background where he is responsible only for himself and not for others around him. In such cases, I suppose one has to search harder to find meaning in life. A poor person in India would often be saddled even during his teens with responsibilities towards his own education, supporting his family and earning money to help educate his siblings and so on. Such responsibilities force a 'purpose' in life and leave little room for estrangement from real life or allow the luxury of 'finding oneself'.

One other reason that made me feel lukewarm towards the book was the narrative having an overtone of romanticizing poverty. Many people have random experiences of great kindness and generosity from the poor in the developing world. But kindness is not exclusive only to the poor. I have travelled extensively in the West and have experienced much kindness from the rich Western world as well. Still, having grown up in poorer backgrounds in India, I can say that poverty can also be cruel, unfeeling and terribly detrimental to one's mental and spiritual development. My experience is that poor people everywhere want to live a materially better life and not keep languishing in poverty.

The other point I have an issue with is the author's characterization of what is 'westernized'. It looks to me that he dubs something as 'western' if it is a feature of upper middle-class living. What he often calls 'westernized' with a negative connotation, turns out to be just a feature of upper middle-class life everywhere, both in the Western as well as the developing worlds.

Finally, there is much usage of expletives, which does not add anything of value to the book. On the contrary, it can alienate many readers.

Very highly recommended.

I recommend this book for anyone who wants to know the real Africa with its mix of personalities (the simple, the corrupt and the in-between). It was interesting to learn that some the words in the Zambian language were the same ones used in East Africa. The first part of the book took me back to the simpler times when I was surrounded by "Ubuntu" - before I became a "Muzungu" and got sidetracked. I love this book. I am glad that it was very realistic. I am glad the middle section of the African trading did not go on for a long time. The ending went back to the basics. Well done!!!

If you are interested in Inbound you need to check out this book

I was blown away by Inbound Marketing for Dummies. Not at all what I was expecting for a "for Dummies" book. I expected some surface level information that left me desiring more information. What I got was a step by step blueprint into how to diagnose the online performance of a business, create a comprehensive inbound marketing strategy, and then implement that strategy for any business.

Scott goes way deeper than keyword research and creating content and covers mapping out customer purchase paths, optimizing websites for conversions, creating call to action maps, user testing, A/B testing, email marketing nurture campaigns, . This is no surface level book.

Someone told me a few days before I got this book: "there is no blueprint for inbound" and I totally agreed. And then I went through this book and created my blueprint. Thanks Scott! Seriously best $25 donation I've made in a long time.
