In recent months, Guerrero has been speaking out about immigration reform, and this book explains why: when she was 14, she came home from school one day to find that her parents had been arrested; they were ultimately deported to Colombia. About the Author

Diane Guerrero is an actress on the hit shows Orange is the New Black and Jane the Virgin. An eye-opening and very relevant read

In a country that is facing mass deportations, this book is very relevant. All of us are familiar with the term "deportation," but few us realize the ramifications, not only to the deportees, but their families. This is a story of true courage, the saga of a fourteen year old child who deals first hand with the devastating effects of deportation. This should be a must read for everyone, especially the incoming members of our federal government who will be shaping future immigration policy. This story is real, riveting, and not sappy. Ms. Guerrero has succeeded in giving us a snapshot into a reality in this country that many don't realize or choose to ignore. An eye-opening read, to say the least.

This wasn't the best written book, didn't feel like the co-author had affected Guerrero's voice so it read authentically. I think I expected Guerrero to focus more on the issue of deportation and less on the rest of her life, but it probably would have been a less effective book without the reader feeling like they got to know her. This wasn't the best memoir I've ever read but I did enjoy it and I appreciate that she discusses a lot of difficult topics with candor.

This is an amazing book. It could not have been easy for her to share her story and I admire her for that. I don't even usually read memoirs but for once, this is not a celebrity simply using her fame to earn more money by writing a book and putting her face on it. This is an amazing book. It is worth the read and brings attention to many important issues.

Listening Made Simple and Better for Even the Most Accomplished Listener

all time best book on Listening. It begins with Listening theory and the psychology of why we fail to listening completely and wholeheartedly. It has practical strategies for developing one's own listening skills. Reading it alone will improve a person's ability to listen in a variety of settings but studying this book will not only improve one's skills but one's relationships. The genius of this book is that it uses antidotes to help the reader see their own listening mistakes and limitations, in a very non threatening manner, which provides a baseline for improvement for even the most accomplished listener.

The Lost Art of Listening Will Show You the Importance of Listening

Are you a bad listener? Cause I am. Or, at least I was before reading this book. Although it may not be a cure-all, it has helped me to be more aware of my thoughts while someone is speaking to me. Instead of normally wandering from one thought to the next, I now make a conscious effort to truly listen, which Dr. Nichols brings to light in his book; The Lost Art of Listening. While this book has helped me, I also have a few criticisms I must share.

After reading through the other reviews for this book, I am surprised by how many thought the examples were so clear. While I can concur to some degree, I thought the examples were sudden and unexpected. In one paragraph he would be talking about an important aspect in listening, and in the next you find yourself in the middle of an example with no direction or forewarning. However, once I re-oriented myself and read through the example, I found it to be helpful in applying the meaning of what Dr. Nichols was trying to get across to my life.

As a current student majoring in Communication, I have learned a thing or two about communication styles and the reasons why people react differently to certain words or phrases than others. One of these reasons is “trigger words,” which are words than incite a positive or negative reaction in someone. I have learned that one of my negative trigger words is that word people tend to call women which also happens to be another name for a female dog. I do not appreciate Dr. Nichols using this word so frequently, even for examples sake. It does not seem completely necessary to get the point across.

Despite these criticisms, there were a few points in his book I really appreciated him adding, for example, his few pages on the differences between how society thinks men are supposed to listen vs. how women are supposed to listen; men give advice, women sympathize, etc. He made sure to say how important it is to listen without these pre-supposed ideas in mind and he asked the right questions, and for that I want to say a big Thank You!

Overall, The Lost Art of Listening is an honest book that has helped me see how I listen, why I listen the way I do, and how I can improve the way I listen for future interactions.

Learning to truly listen is a lost art. Often we quickly access the assumed content of what someone is saying and begin the process of forming our answer. Unfortunately we stop listening when we are busy with our own line of thought.
Example:
Speaker: I have been hurting this past week....
Listener: Whenever I have pains I find it best to use XX drug which really relieves all my pains.
The speaker in this instance was referring to an emotional pain from the loss of a loved one which has nothing to do with medication to relieve the symptoms. The speaker just needed someone to LISTEN and be present, but the listener failed.
This book will give great insights to how to be a better listener in many given situations.
Often the best response from the listener is SILENCE.

John Horswill is a member of IBM's CICS User Technololgy team at IBM in Hursley Park, U.K. He has been involved in delivering information on various platforms, including OS/390, AIX, Solaris, Digital Unix, HP, and Windows NT, for the past 11 years. Before joining IBM, he worked in Further Education in England for many years. He graduated from London University and completed an M.Sc. in Applied Cell Science and Virology at Brunel University before turning his attention to computing. If you can't find him in his office or working from home, he is probably in his garden or hopefully "at the top of a mountain on a clear day."

Evocative and descriptive a treat

Slow moving first half that captures the pace of life on a remote Finnish island. Beautifully descriptive and evocative of a land of seasonal contrasts and a small town population that do not like change. It finishes with a twist int the tale a gripping incident on the ice around which all life is centered in the winter. I really savored and enjoyed this read.

“Captain Geary, I wouldn’t blame you for wondering if you’d have been better off if we hadn’t found you. ‘Black Jack’ Geary, back from the dead to accompany the Alliance Fleet to its greatest victory.” Bloch closed his eyes for a moment. “Now I need to leave the fleet in the hands of someone I can trust.”
�Geary grimaced, wanting to yell at Bloch, tell the admiral that the man he wanted to leave in charge of the fleet wasn’t the man actually standing here, that such a person had never existed.
�He finally just nodded slowly. “Aye, aye, sir.”
�“We’re trapped. This fleet is the Alliance’s last hope.” Bloch leaned close, speaking more softly. “Dauntless has the key onboard. Do you understand? This ship must get home. Somehow. The hypernet key must get back to the Alliance. If we can do that there’ll still be a chance.”
�It wasn’t like Geary would be in charge forever. Bloch would negotiate with the Syndics, then return and be back in command. Geary would never have to learn any details about some “key” on the Dauntless that somehow related to a method of traveling between the stars, which was much more rapid than even the system-jump faster-than-light transportation used in Geary’s time.

Fallen Fleet

Captain John "Black Jack" Geary received his field promotion after everyone thought he'd died in battle. Instead, he'd been in suspended animation for a hundred years when he was found and revived. During that century of warfare that passed, the Alliance struggled against the Syndic, falling prey to the same kind of methodology employed against them by their enemy. Promoted to Fleet Commander after a Syndic betrayal, Geary wants to save as many of his people as he can. Boldly, he begins a campaign that will strand them light-years from home, with the only way back through enemy-held territory. If the Alliance had been the same Alliance he had died for, the chances would be slim. But now the Alliance is a shadow of its former self, no longer a competent force, broken down into segments of selfish officers who won't take orders.

Jack Campbell is the pseudonym for an accomplished SF author. THE LOST FLEET: DAUNTLESS is the first book in a new series.

The authors handling of the military is pitch-perfect. He knows the rules and regs, and he conveys the feeling of battle and being under fire really well. More than the sheer action, move and counter-move, though, he also understand the politics of running a large force and dealing with the enemy in an honorable fashion. The "science" that he's set up to deal with his universe is intact and he adheres to it. Not only do readers learn that the rules of engagement do allow mercy to an enemy, but also that anything over .1 light-speed leaves every other starcraft blurred and in uncertain positions. The military and scientific applications of the story, dealing with honor and command as well as real physics regarding how fast light travels, come across as real. For a science fiction author, it doesn't get any better than that.

Geary's character is a little thin, as is the whole background of the Alliance and the Syndic. Hopefully future installments will illuminate a little more of what Geary gave up, where he came from, and what the societies are like -- other than just opponents.

Readers who enjoyed Robert Heinlein's STARSHIP TROOPERS, Joe Haldeman's FOREVER WAR, John Ringo's Posleen novels and John Scalzi's OLD MAN'S WAR will enjoy THE LOST FLEET: DAUNTLESS.

Enjoyable read, good start to the series

Good characters and fleet actions. Fleet actions felt "real" given some assumed restraints. There were times that immersion was broken, usually when I tried to follow the orders. Not sure if it was the lack of details (time 40 what? 40 seconds from receiving the message? 40 minutes from the start of the battle?) or just trying to wrap my head around relativity.

"Dauntless" The lost Fleet Book1 by Jack Campbell.

A war has been raging across the stars between the Alliance and the Syndics for 100 years now. The Alliance officers do there best to honor the memory of their most sacred hero Captain John "Black Jack" Geary who during the early stages of the war held off a force of Syndics that badly out numbered his fleet long enough for most to escape until his ship was eventually destroyed. As far as the Alliance knows Geary went down with his ship however that isn't the case; Geary has been suspended in hibernation sleep in an escape pod for the past hundred years and has only now been discovered by the Alliance. Now Geary through a turn of events is placed in charge of a new fleet. One who for the most part reveres him as a god even though he knows he isn't. It is Geary's task to keep this fleet alive and return it to Alliance space. In the mean time he will have to try to retrain and command a fleet who have lost most of the tactical fighting knowledge from Geary's time...

"Dauntless" was a very good read but be forewarned that it is not for everyone. Although the story is set in the middle of a war there isn't a substantial amount of action and the battles that do take place are comparable to reading a chess match. The story is actually more about Captain Geary and his interaction with the fleet and watching him deal with his shipmates who think he is some unstoppable god of war from the past when he in fact knows that is not the case. The war takes place in the back ground for the most part and works as a plot device that drives Geary. The battles all take place in space between large fleets and there aren't any close quarters fights explored.

The Good: The concept for the story was great in that it places this great hero of the past amidst the leaders of today and each is forced to examine the other. The history built for the Alliance and the fact that the reader is privy to the Geary's examinations of how things have changed is well done. Geary is the central and main character of the book and overall the character is well drawn.

The Bad: For me nothing. For some this book will be boring. The book focuses mainly on one character and the story is mostly about his attempting to interact with and control and the fleet and the action that does take place is like reading a chess match. If you are looking for an action packed thrill ride this isn't the one for you.

Overall: A great read. If the premise sounds interesting pick it up and give it a try.

It provides you with explanations on what each section should contain and common questions we all ask as doctoral students. Like an ordinary geographical dictionary, The Dictionary of Imaginary Places contains alphabetically organized entries for more than a thousand locales. In this case, however, the locales in question are far from ordinary--they range from the orc-ridden wastes of Tolkien's Middle-earth to the languorous shores of Homer's Island of the Lotus-Eaters. Though for the most part these fantastical lands are mapped and chronicled with straight-faced seriousness, the encyclopedia is not without a certain deadpan wit. For example, the entry for Oz describes "a large rectangular country divided into four small countries.... As a famous visitor once remarked, Oz is not Kansas." This handsome and whimsically charming book, adorned with fanciful line drawings and maps, is rich with enough fictive detail to please the most inveterate reader.

Since the publication of the first Dictionary in 1980, Manguel (A History of Reading) and Guadalupi, a translator and editor, have accepted suggestions from readers and continued their own research. The result is this updated version--a book that includes imaginary terrains from ancient Greece to Harry Potter's Hogwarts. The authors have set a few limitations for inclusion: "no heavens or hells, no places in the future, none outside the planet Earth, no pseudonymous places such as Wessex or Manawaka." Even with those seemingly extensive restrictions, however, the dictionary runs over 700 pages. Each place is described in detail as if it physically existed outside the reader's imagination. Entries are cross-referenced and See references are provided, as well as illustrations and maps that are difficult to locate elsewhere. A valuable reference source to accompany fiction collections, this new edition is recommended for all school, public, and academic libraries.

When the first edition of The Dictionary of Imaginary Places debuted in 1980 (followed by an expanded paperback edition in 1987), it aimed to offer a balance between the practical and the fantastic by using the form of "a nineteenth-century gazetteer." The sense of reality was heightened by illustrations and maps. Now in this newly updated and expanded volume, the same editors have created a "travel" guide to more than 1,200 realms from books and films, with new entries for Hogwarts and Jurassic Park, among other places.

Entries are arranged alphabetically and vary in length from a paragraph or two to several pages for such destinations as Islandia, Middle-Earth, and Utopia. They offer description, history, and travel tips. Source notes at the conclusion of each entry provide author, work, and date of publication. Authors range from fiction writers to essayists, playwrights, film directors, and composers. The index lists places alphabetically under author and cross-references titles to authors. In the index, titles are listed in the original language followed by an English translation in brackets, with the English translation also listed separately.

This guide to "places that never were" delights through the different examples of the fantastic and imaginary, some familiar, such as Narnia and Oz, and others more obscure, such as Carl Sandburg's Palace of Paper Sacks, from Rootabaga Stories, and Margaret Atwood's Realm of the Jaguar Throne, from Murder in the Dark. Besides being fun to browse, the book provides serious support for literature collections. Libraries that have found the previous editions useful will want this update.

More then I bargained for!

I bought this book because I was intriqued by the concept. A book that catalogs all of the places mentioned in other books. What I got completely amazed me. Not only were the places cataloged and indexed by book and by place, but the descriptions were long, even better they included maps.
The people who put together this book understood that the reason people would buy the book was not because they were looking for a one line definition but because they were looking for information about the places themselves. For example, for the definition of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, it would have been easy to write a one line definition stating that this was the school that Harry Potter attended in the Harry Potter series. Instead the book has a definition several pages long including a drawing and also explains everything that has so far been written about the school including the moving staircases and the portraits on the walls. That is just the beginning thousands of places are included in the book, and all are given as much attention in their descriptions as the authors took to explain the locations in the original works of literature.
So enjoy this book, it will make you want to read about places to help you to figure out if you want to read the books that created them.

Strange, but Amazing

I recieved this book for Christmas from my paternal grandparents, who always give me tight stuff. I was crazy about this book, which covers every imaginery place in any book from Prospero's Island in "The Tempest" (great play, by the way) to Thomas More's Utopia. It was an amazing book. If you have ever loved any fantasy book, get this book! It has something to satisfy every interest.

Somewhat disappointed with this "newly updated and expanded" edition. Some entries that appeared in the original are omitted from the new edition. For a book on imaginary places, it's surprising how little space was allocated to Fairyland, especially when compared with the several-pages-long entry on Hogwarts.

Maps are everything when exploring imaginary places; they provide atmosphere as well as information. The maps in this book are generic line drawings, informative but unenchanting, and I can only guess that the authors were unable to negotiate reprinting permissions.

We suggest buying a copy of the original 1980 edition along with the current one; the older book may not have Hogwarts, but it casts its own spell. Also get a copy of An Atlas of Fantasy by Jeremiah Post, which is devoted to reproductions of authentic imaginary maps. Fairyland is documented with Bernard Sleigh's wonderful "Ancient Map of Fairyland" in a two-page spread, Tolkien's famous maps and some private conworlds and con-countries such as Thomas Williams Malkin's "Allestone" are included.

Fantastic book exposing the truth of Islam. The truth that you don't hear from Muslims.

Great book for those who are interested in knowing the truth about the false claims of Islam and Muhammad. Claims of scientific and prophetic knowledge at the time of Muhammad are exposed as pure fallacies. The author, Christian Prince, is extremely knowledgeable of Islam, Muhammad, the Quran and traditions or hadiths. This book, along with his other book, The Deception of Allah Vol. 1, will enlighten you to a lot of the lies that are put out to fool those who are not aware of the facts, the lies that are told to the western people, as well as others, to make them accept Islam as peaceful or holy. Christian Prince puts a knot in all of the bogus claims made by yesterday's and today's supposed scholars. He shows how ignorant the people who claim Islam is the religion of peace truly are.

Another powerhouse book from Christian Prince. He does a remarkable job of exposing the lies and deceit Islam. I have learned so much from Christian Prince and credit him greatly for the bulk of the knowledge I have about Islam. Due to the fact that Arabic is his native tongue, he is able to read Islamic books in Arabic, whish is very valuable since many Islamic books have never been translated from Arabic. The Muslim world tries to hide what is in its books, but Christian Prince exposes their books and shows how Islamic doctrine itself is the number one enemy of Islam.

I absolutely, 100% recommend this book as a resource to debunk the claims about Islam being scientific. And I likewise recommend his first book, the Deception of Allah, which concentrates on exposing Islamic doctrine.
