About the Author
Anthony Saunders is the John M. Schiff Professor of Finance and the Chair of the Department of Finance at the Stern School of Business at New York University. Professor Saunders received his PhD from the London School of Economics and has taught both undergraduate and graduate level courses at NYU since 1978. Throughout his academic career, his teaching and research have specialized in financial institutions and international banking. He has served as a visiting professor all over the world, including INSEAD, the Stockholm School of Economics, and the University of Melbourne. He is currently on the Executive Committee of the Salomon Center for the Study of Financial Institutions, NYU. His research has been published in all the major money and banking and finance journals and in several books. In addition, he has authored or co-authored several professional books, the most recent of which is Credit Risk Measurement: New Approaches to Value at Risk and Other Paradigms, John Wiley and Sons, New York, 1999

I am a part-time lecturer at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago. Due to an inadvertent error in Administration, we opted to purchase the required textbooks for students on-line. Since the semester had already started, timing was a critical issue. I am happy to report that all books were received within two (2) weeks of my ordering without any problems or complications. Helped my class of non-readers

I am an 8th grade English teacher and I have a lot of students that "hate" to read. I found this book by chance and read one of the stories around Halloween. My kids went crazy! They loved it! There is always a fight during our 15 min silent reading time to see who will get this book. The best part is that the stories, with videos and all, are under 15 minutes. I recommend this book to kids that struggle with reading, because they have the video to look forward to at the end of each short story. I think it helps them struggle through. This author is changing the way we can use books inside and outside the classroom. Can't wait for season two!!

3:15 stands for - 1. Listen to an audio file 2. Read the short story 3. Watch the video ending and you get the whole story in about 15 minutes! Each chapter is a short scary/weird story. The stories are full of hair-raising, spine chilling things like ghosts, cursed objects, evil science teachers and everything else that can go "bump in the night"!

You can read 3:15 in 2 ways! One way is getting the book, listening to audio files, and watching the videos online. You can also buy everything as an app. I really liked how Mr. Carman put videos mixed with reading in his Skeleton Creek series and this series I think is really cool. Each story has an audio introduction (and the music is even creepy). The stories are definitely exciting (sometimes even a little too creepy and I didn't read them in the dark)! I really like the short story format of this series. The video endings were something I looked forward to when reading. I think the stories will keep any kid (or adult) interested in reading! My mom said it reminded her of the Twilight Zone (what ever that is, but she said you adults will know ). I would recommend it to kids 10+ only because some of it can be very creepy. It's not like violent but some of the stories are scary! If you are a fan of scary stories, this book is for you! If not, read Mr. Carman's book Floors (one of the best books I have read this year)!

Don't Turn Off The Lights...

Scary stories can be a lot of fun -- especially when they're coming from the mind of Patrick Carman, author of the wildly popular SKELETON CREEK books. And with 3:15 SEASON ONE, Carman delivers another spooky, multimedia piece of work that will leave readers gasping and pulling the covers up and over their heads.

Containing nine stand-alone stories and one tie-in to the SKELETON CREEK books, THINGS THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT boasts a good variety of scares. Each story begins with a passcode to enter on the 3:15 website, where readers can first hear an audio introduction to each story. The introductions are told by a man known as Paul Chandler, who has mysterious secrets of his own to hide away. After each intro, readers dive into the book to find out more of the story. And finally, as they finish reading, they log back onto the website and enter a second passcode that will unlock a video to finish the story.

The creepy introductions do well to set up the mood and perhaps a burning question, and then the written parts add to the general feel. But the scariest part of these stories is definitely the videos, which had me jumping multiple times and checking over my shoulder. I was wondering how the acting and production of each video would be, and I was pleasantly surprised. The actors and actresses do a good job portraying their characters, and even the small spattering of special effects are well done. A couple of times, it seemed like little details from the videos and the book didn't always match up -- such as a certain piece of clothing Carman described characters wearing. But otherwise, the videos fit very well with the format and leave things pretty chilling.

The ten stories are pretty varied, some taking place in the past such as "Buried Treasure" -- the story of a boy living in the 1940's, who ends up letting his greed get the better of him. Some of the stories were downright frightening, and ending up being my favorites, such as "The Lift" -- a story about a teen who goes snowboarding and never comes back from the mountain. The atmosphere created in the audio introduction and throughout the written part definitely left me jumping out of my skin during the final moments of the video. Other tales don't come off quite as well, and I found myself shrugging through them as just being slightly disturbing. One of the best payoffs and frights is in the final story "Night on the Dredge," which is related to the SKELETON CREEK books. The final film is very frightening, and had me reaching over to turn on the lights before I did anything else.

Carman's writing is top notch as usual, and he uses the written parts of each story to set up fairly creepy tales. One of his best here is in the story "Heart of Stone," in which Carman writes about a young girl who builds a strange obsession over checking to see if the gargoyle on her family's high rise building is still there each night. The slow build up of the girl's obsessive behavior added to the overall tone.

Fans of horror type-story collections such as Anthony Horowitz's BLOODY HOROWITZ or THE COMPLETE HOROWITZ HORROR will have a lot of fun with these slightly lighter tales. The multimedia format works well to engage reluctant readers, who can work well with the video, audio and written parts of each story. Hopefully, 3:15 SEASON TWO will be along shortly to give more scares and make all of us wonder just what those bumps in the night really are.

A magical mystery tour in the Third Reich

This is a slow-paced, art film by the master himself, Hans-Jurgen Syberberg. It is also very long (close to eight hours), so to look at it without the book is at times a bit frustrating (since not all the dialogue, or should I say monologues, are translated into english via the subtitles : no english audio track on this DVD). the book is thus a very usaeful companion to anyone interested in this masterpiece. It can be enjoyed by itself, but then one misses the magic Syberberg weaves with his image composition.

My 8 year old boy loves these books. The language level is good for him and the sentence structure is basic without a lot of 'artistic' wording that confuses kids. The story is fun and interested him.

Adorable.

Humphrey's Tiny Tales takes the original Humphrey the classroom hamster into a whole new series of adventures. This series is for the early chapter book crowd and succeeds beautifully. The combination of illustrations and text makes for a fun read with Humphrey helping out his classmates just like he does in the series for older readers. In this one, Humphrey goes home with Richie who needs his help in completing his science project, but Richie's new puppy wants to play with Humphrey too. Unfortunately, Humphrey must find a way to help Richie while staying away from the puppy. A cute animal story for young readers who aren't quite ready for the full length series for older readers.
