One of my favorites

I have a hard time choosing between this book or The Time It Never Rained as my all-time Kelton favorite. This book speaks to the heart of this ol' Texas country boy. The reader will be drawn into the story and feel the raw emotions of the protagonists and even the secondary characters. It is a story of discovery, of new appreciation for things we never thought about, of older values versus newers ways. If you haven't read this book, then you havent read a Western. Don't expect Indian raids, as it is set in more modern days. But there is plenty to sink your teeth into with this Superlative book!

I fave read almost all of Elmer Keltons mmpb books and consider this the best. As the introduction states it's a tale of a old cowboy and hard scrable ranch owner wanting to live out his years on his place.The town wants to buy it to make a lake out of it so everyone is pressureing him to sell. They even enlist his city boy grandson. The tale continuses with the grandson understanding his grandfathers love for the old ranch more and more with the help of a fiesty girl
who dislikes him a soon as she sees him. I will not tell anymore so as not to spoil it for anyone who wants to read it. One of the best and should tug at your heart strings. Don't worry, old and new love wins out in the long run, but what a ride.

About the Author
Much honoured and decorated throughout his lifetime Walter de la Mare (1873-1956) was a prolific author of poetry, short stories and novels. In his lifetime he was popular for his children's stories but also highly respected by contemporary literary writers such as W H Auden, Graham Greene and Angela Carter. Today de la Mare is celebrated for his technical skill, unnerving ability to create atmosphere and the subtle ambiguities of his twisting narratives.

Magical, exotic, poetic fantasy

If you like the Hobbit, you'll love this "children's" novel about three royal monkeys (or mulla-mulgars) who journey across a strangely wintery fantasy Africa so that they can live with their "Uncle Assasimmon, Prince of the Valleys of Tishnar". On the way, they encounter flesh-eating "minimuls," "mountain mulgars" who do battle with eagles, the deadly beast Immanala, a beautiful water-midden who tricks one of the mulgars and takes his magic "wonderstone", a lost "Oomgar" from England, and many other adventures. The tone of the writing is wonderfully poetic and evocative, the verbal equivalent of Arthur Rackham's paintings. It's a crime this novel isn't better known.

The Monkeys' Quest

It was no less a literary light than Doris Lessing who brought this book to my attention. She gave it a warm review in "Time Bites," her collection of nonfiction pieces, so I sought it out for the Kindle and gave it a read. She was right. Its a fine tale of a quest that easily bears the comparison with Tolkien that it's often subjected to. In fact, it was written decades before Tolkien wrote his masterpieces, but I have no idea if De la Mare influenced the later writer.

Instead of Hobbits, the characters here are three monkey brothers trying to retrace their father's footsteps in search of their ancestral home. I should say three delightful monkeys, for each is a distinct individual. They journey through a magical landscape as vividly populated with talking animals as any Kipling jungle, and they meet challenges with a mixture of wisdom and foolishness that's all too familiar to us imperfect humans. On top of all the adventure, humor, and wonder lies ravishing language wielded by a poet who loved sounds and words for their own sake. This is one of those rare books that offers you more the more you bring to it. If you have any interest at all in fantasy literature, don't miss it.
