Excellent overview - far from a Bible

This book is very well written and David is clearly an excellent educator, as his videos reveal. I would highly recommend both this book and the video series as a basic introduction to Flash Builder/Flex 4. However, I feel the term 'Bible' is a fairly serious misnomer. The book provides an overview, but goes into very little detail on any given subject. Once you start actually using Flex to create a project, you're going to run into LOTS of questions. How do I clear a form? How do I effectively make multiple HTTPService requests from a single instance of the class? Does a TitleWindow have to be popped up before its public properties and methods are available? How do I create skinnable icon button with no label? What are the rules for use of the various meta tags (Bindable, Embed, etc)? How do I make an MVC app in Flex? How do I create a custom data service?

Flex is a VERY large and deep program and no single volume could possibly hope to cover it completely. I just want you to be prepared to purchase another book soon after reading this one.

Great Work

I used this book for a final project that I had to do as part of my graduate study. Let me first mention that at the time of starting to read this book, I didn't know anything about Flex or Flash Builder. This book brought me up to speed on these two quickly. I found it to be a relatively easy read (compared to other books). I came from a Java programming background and found that Flex is different from other technologies out there. I ended up using Flex frontend with Java backend and I was able to put together an application relatively quickly. If you are already proficient with a server side language, you will be in a position to write Flex applications quickly. This book also shows how to integrate with Flex with different server side languages (PHP, Java etc.) although I have to say I did find the book to be somewhat weak in this area for Java though. That's why I am giving this book 4 stars. I supplemented this book with couple of online tutorials on Adobe's website which have a good coverage of this topic. My application turned out so well that my professor at the university complimented me on it. For those who are students, you don't need to buy Flash Builder (which is an Eclipse plug-in), but you need to submit your student credentials to Adobe (search for the link on Adobe's site using Google) and then Adobe will send you the serial numbers in a day or two. There is enough detail for beginners and intermediate users. Highly recommended.

A very good resource

After trying a couple of the simpler books on Actionscript, I finally got the 'bible' and it is well worth it. It not only introduces concepts well, fills in most of the blanks, and covers what a lot of other books don't, it's also a wonderful reference to have on the shelf. If you only get one book on Flash development, get this one.

Riven: A Horror Masterpiece in Graphic Novels

Riven is an excellent graphic novel perfect for fans of the horror genre as well as run-of-the-mill comic readers. This is a perfect example of the kind of horror story that writers and directors should be writing today. So many of the horror books and films today overdo the gore and slashing, amplify the gross and repugnant, and exaggerate needless sex. However, Robert Tinnell and Bo Hampton do the opposite: they add these elements tastefully and with style. I believe there is a formula for the perfect horror story, and these two craft an engaging and horrifying tale that hits the nail on the head.

First, Tinnell knows his horror. As a fan of the genre myself, I was so pleased to see a horror story with some depth. Readers can relate to the story's rich characters. Their dialogue is real and their problems all too tangible. Furthermore, as a fan of the Canadian Ginger Snaps films, I took an instant liking to Katya, Riven's youthful protagonist. Tinnell tampers with the ideas of female sexuality and development along with the werewolf transformation process and casts them as a metaphor for growing up. However, though Katya and Ginger both undergo hormonal changes as well as wolf-like urges, Riven goes where Ginger Snaps doesn't: Tinnell explores the "werewolf" genre from a traditional standpoint, staying true to the lore and elements that make a werewolf story a werewolf story but, while making it so much more. It's really the story of a girl finding her way and discovering the sort of person she wants to be.

Next, Hampton's artwork is absolutely stunning. I found myself asking why this guy isn't doing work for DC or Marvel. His artwork is amazing. Period.
Hampton knows how to capture a mood. His style invokes that distinct horror-esque atmosphere that you see in the movies: the calm fall surroundings and the Autumn like settings that sweep you in and make you feel safe. But there is something there among the trees and auburn leaves, something monstrous and chilling, elements that his gothic artistry bring forth. Furthermore, Hampton's artwork embellishes the essence of illustrative comic art, while maintaining that almost Romantic aesthetic that authors like Washington Irving thrive on to describe and enrich their stories. Speaking of Irving, one should definitely check out Hampton's Legend of Sleepy Hollow graphic novel. I cannot praise Hampton's artwork enough! Again, I think he should do artwork for DC or Marvel. I for one would love to see his take on super heroes and strongly feel he could bring something unique and different to the genre.

Riven is truly a masterpiece in graphic/illustrative horror, my personal favorite of Tinnell and Hampton's collaborations. Hampton's art meshed with Tinnell's writing makes a cinematic masterpiece that not only has scares and thrills, but has heart. These guys could give the Walking Dead's Robert Kirkman a run for his money!

Just an all around great book! I hope to see more from these guys!

Perfection in Comic Book Form

Okay, seriously, WOW! When I read the solicit on this book, I knew to expect something good, but I didn't know it was going to be this good. This book has the words "Turn me into a movie" written all over it. The artwork by Hampton did present a bit of a curve for me to get used to. I think that is primarily based on what I am guessing are water colors, and it is just something I am personally not used to seeing in comics today. Looking back at the pages now all I can say is that this book is GORE-Geous, and you have to be Howl-ing mad to not think that this is some of the best Werewolf art to date. The death scenes alone gave this book a solid 5 in terms of a score. The story presented here has already won awards in my mind. There were so many twists and turns, that there is no way, I would have been able to expect what would happen next. The cast just comes to life and shines on every single page. This book by Tinnell and Hampton should have the entire horror community (not just comics) talking, so please do yourself a favor, read this book and then spread the word. Now if you will excuse me I need to board a plane to Hollywood and go talk to some producers. READ THIS BOOK!

Shines like the Full Moon on a Clear Night

Riven is a fantastic treatment of the classic werewolf tale. Hampton and Tinnell have managed to tell a modern werewolf story that still has some Old Country charm, and they do it well. The visuals are striking; they are gritty and well illustrated, and they do not have the polished, clean digital look that would compromise a dark little piece, like this one. Especially well done were the instances of werewolf violence that are sprinkled throughout; rather than being the focal point of the illustration, with steaming viscera and pages upon pages of red ink, they are more flavor. While still pretty brutal, they don't get lost in gore, and do their job of reminding the reader of something monstrous lurking, without beating one over the head with it. I purchased this because I am a slave to werewolf fiction, and just can't help myself. I did so with the idea that it would be like so much of the other horror that I've read, plunging headlong into the action, leaving nothing to make the reader dangle a bit, and ultimately filled with plot holes and the same tired cast of characters. I couldn't have been more wrong. The writing needs to be commended for its pacing, which did an excellent job of building a sense of dread and uncertainty. The plot had a fresher feel, one I've not seen done as much, and I think the characters were well chosen to boot. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to be told a story, rather than watch a slasher, and who might prefer the classic werewolf films to the Underworld flicks.

This is a good book with general methods for transforming your life. The Part One provides very good information on the Evolution of Consciousness and explains in a very understandable way how the subconscious works. Part Two includes the Technics for Transformation. The author writes in a very clear way and provides several references if you want to deep in the subject. She provides very strict reasons why we must never manipulate the will of another and its meaning and why “positive visualization” is considered white magic. The only thing that is deficient is that the Figures are not very clear. They look as if they were printed with injected ink. One of the most important things on the book is that “the power of thought is the only thing over which you have unquestionable control”. This book is for the general reader.

About the Author

Masoud Farzaneh, an internationally renowned expert in the field of power engineering, is a professor of Electrical Engineering at the Universite du Quebec a Chicoutimi (UQAC). Farzaneh, who receive a Doctor d'Etat in 1986, has taught more than 100 undergraduate and graduate course sessions in electric power engineering. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, IET, and Engineering Institute of Canada.

Shahab Farokhi, Ph.D., received his PhD in 2010. He has taught graduate-level courses in Advanced Power Network Transmission and Operating and Power System Analysis at the Universit� du Qu�bec � Chicoutimi (UQAC). He joined the faculty of Glasgow Caledonian University in 2012.

William A. Chisholm, Ph.D., received a Doctorate in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo. He has co-supervised more than ten graduate students and delivered industrial training and graduate courses on weather effects on overhead lines. Dr. Chisholm is Secretary of the IEEE Transmission and Distribution Committee and contributes a column to INMR, a quarterly technical magazine for the electrical industry.

Chapter two identifies the more important orientations and developments of the Catholic tradition from early medieval Scholasticism up to the first part of the twelfth century. Chapter three singles out the special contribution of early Scholasticism to Latin eucharistic theology Chapter four functions as a bridge from early Scholasticism to high Scholasticism by outlining the general approach to a synthetic theology of the Eucharist which was obtained at the beginning ofthe thirteenth century. Chapter five treats eucharistic theology from high Scholasticism to the Council of Trent. Chapter six summarizes the dogmatic teaching of the Council of Trent. This is followed in Chapter seven, by a treatment of salient features of post-Tridentine eucharistic theology. Chapter eight includes an analysis of the practice and theology of Mass stipends. Chapter nine includes a detailed analysis of Aquinas's theology of the eucharistic sacrifice. I'll slide this one up to four stars. . .

. . .due to the circumstances under which it was written. Fr. Edward J. Kilmartin, SJ died before this, his magnum opus was complete. His notes were left on his computer, and one of his students provided the final editing and publishing work.
This results in a text which is extremely detailed in places, and extremely sketchy in others, apparently where Fr. Kilmartin was unable to "flesh out" the material. Some chapters were complete -- some were more outlines.
Nevertheless, this book is a wonderful discussion of both the history and the theology of the Eucharist throughout the course of Western Christian history. The medieval Eucharistic controversies are covered in detail, as are the issues surrounding the Eucharistic questions at the time of the Reformation and the Council of Trent.
Kilmartin is noteworthy here for his insistance that the task of the Church in the Third Millenium is to provide a theology of the Eucharist which is theologically sound, biblical, historic, and at the same time meaningful and relevant.
While not necessarily agreeing with every point and emphasis, nevertheless, I highly recommend this book. It represents a clarion call to authentic thought scholarship -- and to the translation of such thought scholarship to the level of the man in the pew.

Great for Academic Study

I was a member of Dr. Daly's class at Boston College which first went through the pre-publication version of this manuscript. I found Kilmartin's work to be a valuable academic help to my work on a Master's Thesis on the Lord's Supper.

If you're doing research in the area of the Eucharist -- find this book if you can. Especially if you're looking into recent Roman Catholic trends in eucharistic thought.
