Could not put this book down - Hilarious!

I read this book in two days flat. I was hooked after the first two pages and could not stop reading. This comic story of a teenager in college and his experiences with love, lust and friendships is something everyone will relate to.

The author is brutally HONEST and HILARIOUS in portraying the minutest details (at times quite explicit!) of the life of a college going guy in the 90s in India. Having grown up in India around the same time as the author, I can personally attest that he is spot on with how life was back then. He has a knack for painting pictures with words and one can easily visualize his descriptions - from how the old decrepit buildings of his college must have looked like to the painful art of tying a pugh (turban) to the various characters he meets during his four years of college.

His anecdotes around the Indian bureaucracy, college life, ragging, and interactions with the opposite sex brought back many memories of my own leading to a lot of chuckles and guffaws :). This book is as REAL as it gets!

The writer also has a flair for introducing just enough suspense at the end of each chapter to make you want read more. In summary - A MUST READ!

Girls - if you want to know how guys think - read it
Aunties - Please don't read it!! We don't want to be in the embarrassing situation where you know what we did as teenagers.

Funny and Nostalgic

There is a new hero in town and his name is Arjun Singh. He is a typical Sardar - headstrong, funny and good natured !

Chhatwal brings home nostalgia and humor in this story of Arjun Singh and his mis-steps through college life. A particular highlight of this book is the detail with which Chhatwal describes a situation- it makes you 'see' it like its happening in front of you.

Everyone of us has these images in mind when reading this book since we have through similar life situations. Chhatwal's story reminds us of the crazy days in college and also of the friendships and the good times. The book is especially good at creating humor and touches upon a nerve- Arjun's way of dealing with his hair and how he tends to blame everything in his life on that. We have all had similar stories...

Read 55 if you have a long flight / or a long weekend where you want to read something light, easy and funny ! You will enjoy it....

Do your sense of humour a favour and read it already

Hilarious from the get go.

It's touching, funny and written from the heart. I enjoyed reading it nearly back to back over the weekend.

A fantastic effort from a first time writer. Chetan goes with the flow and the book never lets you down.

It was immensely relatable for me since I too went to Delhi University in the mid-90s briefly and I remember the adventure like it was yesterday.

Pick it up!!!

In the awfully silly I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie, children's librarian and author Alison Jackson bypasses pilgrims completely and cuts straight to the stomach of Thanksgiving in America--dinner. A slightly dizzying new spin on the well-loved cumulative rhyming song "I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly," this madcap picture book stars a ravenously hungry relative who comes to Thanksgiving dinner with a pie. Since she eats the pie in its entirety before she even gets in the house, she has to swallow some cider (that "rumbled and mumbled and grumbled inside her"). If you must know, "She swallowed the cider to moisten the pie, / The Thanksgiving pie, which was really too dry, /Perhaps she'll die." The story continues in this vein, as we watch the hosts grow visibly alarmed--and the children visibly delighted-- by the old lady's surreal appetite and supernaturally increasing girth. PreSchool-K. In a holiday version of a familiar children's song, an old lady swallows a dry Thanksgiving pie and a succession of other foods, beginning with an entire jug of cider to moisten the pie. Although the cider rumbles and grumbles agreeably inside her, the other foods are not related. The woman swallows a salad to go with a squash, a pot to go with a turkey, and a 10-layer cake to go with the pot. While no one can accuse the original "I Know an Old Lady" of making sense, the animals devoured increase in size each time and fit into a more-or-less logical food chain. Jackson's version is redeemed, however, by the fun of rhymes such as "Her future looked murky, after that turkey" and an ending that shows the old lady as a giant balloon in a Thanksgiving Parade as she finally says, "I'm full." Schachner's watercolor illustrations are absolutely delightful. this book is so much fun! it is very clever

this book is so much fun! it is very clever...great book to give to a child around thanksgiving time as it talks about all the things that might wind up on your thanksgiving day table...and concludes with the big parade! the illustrations are chaotically fun and colorful and the rhyming is entertaining as the story unfolds. the only reason i'm not giving it five stars is...every page ends with..."Perhaps she'll die!"...which is of course is the way the poem goes. But, i would much preferred the author to say, for example, "She swallowed the cider to moisten the pie, the Thanksgiving pie that was really too dry...WE DON'T KNOW WHY"...instead of "perhaps she'll die".

Other than that...lots of fun!

Great book!

This is a great book. My 3&1/2 year old son loves it. We read a lot of books and this one has already been ready many times. We can pretty much recite the whole thing. Must say though, maybe instead of, "Perhaps she'll die" the author could of used something less grim. I don't mind it but for people who do, just know that "Perhaps she'll die" comes after each and everything she swallows.

I got tired of the "fly" version of this poem ...

I got tired of the "fly" version of this poem decades ago, and the "shell" version and others never really impressed me (I guess I'm tougher to please than I'd have thought...), UNTIL...she decided to swallow the entire Thanksgiving dinner! When I read it, I DON'T just "read" it, but we all SING it together, and the children I teach BEG for it, all autumn long!

MCP Plaid Phonics - always great!

This is a great phonics for first graders. Its primary focus is phonics, but it also incorporates context clues and high-frequency words to make it more of a total reading program. The teacher's manual has good suggestions for presenting new concepts as well as extension activities. We use many of the extended writing activities. The workbook is very colorful and engaging. It is just right...inviting and interesting without using puppets, games, songs, etc. which can be a distraction for some children. Overall I think that it is a great program for homeschool or supplement for regular school.

Great series!

MCP Phonics is an excellent series of phonics books. The books are full-color and highly interesting to children, incorporating a wide variety of exercises to keep learning fresh. The sounds are presented in a logical sequence, each year building on the previous. I love these manuals; they have good scope and sequences to help with planning, pre- and post-tests for each unit to help you check for student understanding, and lots of teaching ideas to help students learn different concepts in a fun way.

great workbook

This book at the Second grade level is everything it said it was. The easy tear out pages, colorful illustrations and simple directions make the students want to do it. The sturdy abc and word cards found in the back of the book with its own envelope is an added bonus!

As an architect (who hasn't been to Venice enough), I have enjoyed dipping in to the first edition for years. As a photographer I recognise the quality of the images by A F Kersting in that edition. Without exception they are technically impeccable, well composed, and had a real sparkle and brilliance. Printed on better quality paper, in duotone, I would happily pay 2 or 3 times the cost of the book. By comparison the image of Sarah Quill were rather dull and lacking - surely she had a wide langle lens I thought - worse was the converging verticals, that really had no place in an architecture book. It is easy to avoid them when taking a photograph, why didn't she?
It is regrettable in this edition that Kersting's fine b+w images have been jettisoned for far more SQ images. That these images still perpetuate converging and diverging verticles is sloppy. That they haven't been corrected at pre-production is astonishing. Not `splendid' photographs, merely workaday

A Thorough and Facinating History of this Unique City

Deborah Howard's account of this unique city, it's origin and development over the years is is a fascinating document. Together with the excellent photogaphs in full colour by Sarah Quill and Deborah Howard this book is inavaluable to anyone who has visited Venice. This book may be classed as a history book to compliment a persons interests in what may be missing from regular guide books. It is not a boring book about constructural practices per say but more about the ingenious ways in which the early settlers escaped from tyranical oppression and created their primitive home in a lagoon that has become the most beautiful collection of architecture anywhere today. Having visited Venice several times I wanted to find out more about this great place. To say that necessity is the mother of invention is living proof which led to the construction of the city of Venice. If you love Venice you will love this book. David Dickinson Alberts, Canada

Good, but Difficult Reading

I am creating the syllabus for a new 100 - 200 level course that will be taught at Colorado Mountain College in the fall of 2011. I have decided to use this text as it fully explores the various meanings and interpretatioons of environmental and social theories. My only complaint is that it is a little too in depth for the freshman/sophomore classes I will be using it for, therefore I will have to "walk" my students through the readings rather than "assign" them.
