About the Author

Chunling Du received her B.E. and M.E. degrees in electrical engineering from the Nanjing University of Science and Technology, Nanjing, China, in 1992, and 1995, respectively, and aPh.D degree from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, in 2000. She is currently a senior researcher with Data Storage Institute, Singapore, where she is involved in modeling and advanced servo control of hard disk drives. Her research interests include high precision motion control, multidimensional systems, and structure health diagnosis using sensing network. She has published dozens of journal papers and the monograph H-infinity Filtering and Control of two-dimensional Systems with Professor Lihua Xie. Dr. Du is a senior member of IEEE.

Lihua Xie received his B.E. and M.E. degrees in electrical engineering from Nanjing University of Science and Technology in 1983 and 1986, respectively, and a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Newcastle, Australia, in 1992. Since 1992, he has been with the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, where he is currently a professor and Director, Centre for Intelligent Machines. He concurrently holds Changjiang Professorship with the College of Automation, South China University of Technology.

Dr Xie’s research interests include robust control and estimation, networked control systems, time delay systems, control of disk drive systems and sensor networks. He has published over 170 journal papers and co-authored a number of books in his field. He is an Associate Editor of Automatica, IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, the Transactions of the Institute of Measurement and Control, and an associate editor-at-large of Journal of Control Theory and Applications, and is also a member of the editorial board of IET Proceedings on Control Theory and Applications. He served as an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems-II, International Journal of Control, Automation and Systems, and on the conference editorial board for the , IEEE Control Systems Society. Dr Xie is a Fellow of IEEE and a Fellow of Institution of Engineers, Singapore.

Practicing the Power of Now - A Powerful Life Changing Experience

This book has changed my life. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to get in touch with his or her inner self and live a more peaceful life. Every time I read this book, and I have read it several times, I learn something else about myself. You can recommend this book to others, but they have to be ready for it. My sister tried to introduce me to Eckhart Tolle last year, but I wasn't ready for him so I didn't bother to purchase his books. I have learned that when it's time for something to change in your life, you will know it. Love this book and other Exkhart Tolle's books. I have practiced meditation for many years, meditating twice a day. Now I can meditate anytime and that's a wonderful feeling knowing that I don't have to wait for a specific time to be at peace. I walk through the park now and I actually hear the birds or the other sounds around me. That's a WOW for me. I accept others more and am aware of when I am judging them or other things around me. More and more I am in control of my thinking and that's powerful. All of this came about as a result of reading this book. Buy this book and you will understand what I am saying; that is, if you are ready for change in your life. Powerful book!

Helped with anxiety

I suffered from severe anxiety, panic attacks, and mild depression. I purchased so many books and programs over the years and had little or no luck with them. I can't remember when and why I purchased The Power of Now but I randomly decided to read it. Actually, I think I was desperate and was hoping I would find the answer to my problems by re-reading all the books I purchased. Well, I'm so glad I did because it has helped me tremendously. I listen to this Audible version during my daily commute. It's great. I can now separate myself from my anxious mind and feel calm and peaceful.

I am eighty four years of age and the last fifty five of that I have progressively came to the conclusion that I am not this body, not this mind but something far greater, but could not put that into proper perspective. then a dear friend who knew how I was wrestling with that brought me a plaque that said [Just as the sea is all of the wave, and the wave only part of the sea, so am I a part of God and god is all of me] I came to believe that whole heartedly, but still could not understand how I might bring that feeling to life. Eckhart Tolle teaches that it is necessary is to bring ourselves to that feeling which is life. I not only read this book but I study it and shows me that the gut feeling I have had all these many years was not just some nutty idea, Eckharts The Power of Now shows the way. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has the courage to question conventional wisdom and flawed teaching. You too can find the way.

"I was born in Lansing, Michigan in 1944. Soon after my birth I lived in Williamston, Michigan and then moved onto my grandparents farm in Union City, Michigan.

"I lived on the farm with my mom and Grandparents until 1949. That is when my Babushka (my grandmother) died and we prepared to move away from Michigan. "My parents were divorced when I was 3, and both my father and mother moved back into the homes of their parents. I spent the school year with my mother, and the summers with my dad. In both households I was the apple of my grandparents' eyes! I would say that these relationships with my grandparents have most definitely influenced my life and my work. You probably have noticed that in almost every book that I write there is a very young person who is interacting with an elderly person. Personally, I feel that this is the most valuable experience of my life....having the wonder of knowing both children and elderly people.

"The respect that I learned as a very young person certainly carried over into my life in later years. I have always like hearing stories from these folks. My genuine curiosity for the wonder of living a very long life prepared me to accept the declining years of my own parents.

"To get back to the farm in Union City...this place was so magical to me that I have never forgotten it! This was the place where I heard such wonderful stories told...this was the place that a real meteor fell into our font yard...that very meteorite is now our family headstone in the graveyard here in Union City.

"Did I tell you that I now live in Union City? This is after living in Oakland, California for almost 37 years. But, you see, every year I'd come back to Michigan to see my Dad and family.

"Anyway...

"In 1949 we left the farm to move, first to Coral Gables, Florida. I lived there with my Mom and my brother, Richard, for almost 3 years. Then we moved to Oakland, California. I remained there for most of my young life on into my adulthood. We lived on Ocean View Drive in the Rockridge District. What I loved the most about this neighborhood is that all of my neighbors came in as many colors, ideas and religions as there are people on the planet. How lucky I was to know so many people that were so different and yet so much alike.

"It is on Ocean View that I met my best friend, Stewart Grinnell Washington. We are best friends to this day! He has a younger brother, Winston and three sisters; Jackie, Terry and Robin. When I was a student in elementary school I wasn't a very good student. I had a terrible time with reading and math. As a matter of fact, I did not learn how to read until I was almost 14 years old. Can you imagine what it was like to see all my friends do so well in school and I wasn't! I thought I was dumb. I didn't like school because there was this boy that always teased me and made me feel even dumber. When I was fourteen, it was learned that I have a learning disability. It is called dyslexia. I felt trapped in a body that wouldn't do what everybody else could do. That was when one of my hero's, my teacher, found what was wrong with me and got me the help I needed to succeed in school. Of course, now that I am an adult, I realize that being learning disabled does not mean DUMB AT ALL! As a matter of fact, I have learned that being learning disabled only means that I cannot learn the way most of you do. As a matter of fact, most learning disabled children are actually GENIUSES! Once I learned how to read and caught up with the rest of my fellow students, I did very well.

"I went on to University, majored in Fine Art, then went on to do a graduate degree and even ended up with a Ph.D. in Art History. For a time I restored ancient pieces of art for museums. I eventually became the mother of two children, Steven and Traci, and devoted much of my days to their education and upbringing.

"I did not start writing children's books until I was 41 years old. Mind you the "art" has always been there for me most of my life. Apparently one of the symptoms of my disability in academics is the ability of draw very, very well. So drawing, painting and sculpture has always been a part of my life even before I started illustrating my books. The books were quite a surprise, really. Mind you, I came from a family of incredible storytellers. My mother's people were from the Ukraine and Russia...my father's people were from Ireland. My extended family,(Stewart's family) were from the bayous of Louisiana...also great story tellers. When you are raised on HEARING stories.....NOT SEEING THEM, you become very good at telling stories yourself. So at the age of 41 I started putting stories that I told down on paper and did drawings to help illustrate them...I guess the rest is history.

"I have enjoyed a wonderful career of writing books for children . Who could have guessed that little girl that was having such a tough time in school would end up an illustrator and author. Children and adults alike ask me where I get my ideas...I get them from the same place that you do....MY IMAGINATION... I would guess the reason my imagination is so fertile is because I came from storytelling and, WE DID NOT OWN A T.V.!!!!!!!!! You see, when one is a writer, actor, dancer, musician; a creator of any kind, he or she does these things because they listen to that "voice" inside of them. All of us have that "voice". It is where all inspired thoughts come from....but when you have electronic screens in front, of you, speaking that voice for you... it DROWNS OUT THE VOICE! When I talk to children and aspiring writers, I always ask them to listen to the voice, turn off the T.V. and

"LISTEN...LISTEN...LISTEN.

"Now that I have moved back to Union City I am intending to open my house and community and invite people to come there to take part in writing seminars, story telling festivals, literature conferences and various events that celebrate children's literature."

Born Patricia Ann Barber in Lansing, Michigan, to parents of Russian and Ukrainian descent on one side and Irish on the other, Patricia Polacco grew up in both California and Michigan. Her school year was spent in Oakland, California, and summers in her beloved Michigan. She describes her family members as marvelous storytellers. "My fondest memories are of sitting around a stove or open fire, eating apples and popping corn while listening to the old ones tell glorious stories about their homeland and the past. We are tenacious traditionalists and sentimentalists.... With each retelling our stories gain a little more Umph!"

Studying in the United States and Australia, Patricia Polacco has earned an M.F.A. and a Ph. D. in art history, specializing in Russian and Greek painting, and iconographic history. She is a museum consultant on the restoration of icons. As a participant in many citizen exchange programs for writers and illustrators, Patricia Polacco has traveled extensively in Russia as well as other former Soviet republics. She continues to support programs that encourage Russo-American friendships and understanding. She is also deeply involved in inner-city projects here in the U.S. that promote the peaceful resolution of conflict and encourage art and literacy programs.

The mother of a grown son and a daughter, Patricia Polacco currently resides in Michigan, where she has a glorious old farm that was built during the time of Lincoln.

The Lemonade CLub

This was a very sweet, age appropriate book for my daughter. She and I really enjoyed it. My daughter smiled and laughed while I choked back my tears. This books captures life with cancer very well.

My daughter is 5 years old, in kindergarten, and in treatment for leukemia. She was bald when she started school and it was a Big Deal when she gathered enough confidence to attend school without her head scarf. She really enjoys reading books about experiences she has gone through during treatment. It makes her feel less alone. I am grateful to Patricia Polacco for writing this book.

It was wonderful to read a book that truly "got it" when it comes to feeling about cancer, teasing, children, friends and making the best of sour lemons.

Polacco has an almost magical ability to tell powerful, yet beautiful stories. In "The Lemonade Club," Polacco is telling a true story that involves her daughter, Traci, Traci's best friend, Marilyn, and their fifth grade teacher, Miss Wichelman.

Traci and Marilyn were best friends and did everything together---as best friends do. They were even in the same class and they both loved their teacher, Miss Wichelman. Miss Wichelman was loved because she encouraged her students to dream and to overcome challenges by making lemonade from lemons. This advice was put to the test when Marilyn was diagnosed with cancer (leukemia). Marilyn undergoes treatments, becomes weak, obtains bruises, loses her hair, and struggles with good and not so good days. Traci and Miss Wichelman visit her frequently while she recovers from her treatments...meanwhile; the entire fifth grade class plans a surprise for Marilyn's first day back to school. I was already teary-eyed from the beginning of the book but the surprise released the floodgates and I cried happy tears. It also happens that Miss Wichelman has breast cancer, so she bonds with Marilyn and Traci in a meaningful way. The three become the Lemonade Club and when Miss Wichelman marries five years later, Marilyn and Traci wear bright lemon yellow gowns in the ceremony in celebration of not only the wedding but also in celebration of their recoveries and Miss Wichelman following her career dream.

Polacco includes actual photographs of The Lemonade Club ladies all grown up and it is remarkable to be able to connect the book characters with the real people.

Another Wonderful Patricia Polacco!

Patricia Polacco books are picture books, often time with a deep or heavy theme. Just because a book is a picture book, doesn't mean it's necessarily right for a 3 year old. That being said, there is no right way to decide what age IS the appropriate age for this book. Often times with her books, I feel that they can be good for kids way past the typical picture book age! Even as an adult, I can deeply appreciate her books. Younger children can benefit from this story as well, though. So often, a child may have a person in their life who has cancer, and they may not understand what it is, or how that person might be feeling on a day to day basis. They may not understand why that person is wearing a scarf or hat. Sadly, there may be a child in a class going through this- this is a true story of a friend in the author's daughter's class! And sadly, this book may be a help to a child who is going through this him/herself!

I am a huge Patricia Polacco fan and I appreciate that she addresses some tough issues others might not know how to touch on! Even in my twenties, she is one of my favorite authors! Another job well done!

WoundHealer best of the sword boods

I remember reading WoundHealer years ago - it was a terrific read, I thought it was the best of the Sword books. It could easily stand on its own as a movie (not kidding - and I would definitely pay to see it).

I was a fan of the entire series but WoundHealer was the one that really had a magical feeling to it - in fact, I think I'll read it again after I finish Ardneh's Sword - which I just started :) !!

Pretty good book

This book is good for digital design basic concepts, but I think the approach is to practical in some chapters I would rather prefer good reinforcement that passing to another basic concept. But overall is good.
