Instructors: please, please find another book for your students.

This book is intensely frustrating to use. It's heavily focused on grammar, but the grammar instructions are confusing to the point that I still don't understand what's going on even after reading the page 3 times. The vocabulary seems to be chosen completely at random (you learn words like 'existence' and 'privacy' before you learn the word 'blue'). Vocabulary lists are now defined using Arabic words that you have seen before rather than using English. This means that if you don't remember the old word, you can't learn the new word either. The authors don't really keep track of which words you have already learned, so all the exercises are filled with words that aren't in the vocabulary list and haven't ever been presented before. Each chapter has a long passage for reading practice, in which you are supposed to guess words that you don't know from context. This would be reasonable, if you already knew 90% of the words and only needed to guess 10%--but there are so many unfamiliar words that you're left with no context to figure them out. Even familiar words are used in unfamiliar forms so that you're left guessing what they mean. Did you think you could use the glossary in the back of the book to figure it out? You can't--because the glossary only goes Arabic-English (not English-Arabic) and doesn't even include all the vocabulary. Some of the words aren't in my other dictionary either. And don't make the mistake of thinking you can figure anything out by buying the separate answer key, because the key only includes about half the exercises. Some of the online exercises are OK--but many of them are formatted so that it's impossible to click and drag the answers to the right place because the boxes are the wrong size and you have to scroll past the answer choices in order to reach the end of the question. With this book, even simple homework assignments take hours and become so frustrating that even highly motivated students like me end up pulling their hair out and remembering nothing of what they were supposed to learn. The one redeeming thing about this book is that it presents all the vocabulary in Levantine and Egyptian dialects as well as standard, and on the website you can listen to how they are all pronounced. But since there is never an opportunity to practice the dialects, they don't sink in. Bottom line, I love learning languages, and I've always been successful before. But after a year and a half of using the al-Kitaab books, I cannot even hold a simple conversation. Teachers: please, please find another book to use.

With a good teacher this is a good book for a difficult subject. I used it in an intermediate/advance class and we covered 4 chapters in a one-semester class, for 3 credits. I spent a lot of time listening (to CD and companion site) and studying the vocabs, grammar and exercises. It has been frustrating and difficult but I was able to slowly absorbed quite a bit of the materials and I am beginning to feel that I can start to read simple materials (with a dictionary) and understanding some of the news and documentaries from Youtube in bits and pieces. I know that this will probably be a long journey for me to become better in the subject. I hope to report back when I am able to finish studying the entire book.

A good follow-up to the first part of Al-Kitaab with a nice mix of reading, listening and grammar.
BUT the book key (which gives access to the website of Al Kitaab) is ONLY available if the product is bought new.
