An enjoyable read, but not in the same league as the books in The Boss series
By Ellen
I pre-ordered both books because I love the series in which these characters first appeared. As usual, the writing is sharp and the interactions, dialogue and story are so much better than most. I'm about 60% through Ian's story, having already finished Penny's, and I'm finding that I have to force myself to read that book. I did enjoy Penny's story (with some exceptions) and Ian's story is, arguably, even better but I JUST READ THIS STORY and the different perspective is a little too redundant to hold my interest. I'll review that book when I'm finished, but here's what I thought about Penny's Story.
The emphasis on Penny's virginity got really old. I get that it's central to the relationship (and even features in the title), but I got a little tired of it. Same with the constant references to how superstitious she is. Frankly, it made her seem a bit stupid that she held onto her virginity because of some family curse that she actually thought had the power to affect her life.
The relationship with her parents made no sense to me. Why did she study business (I think it was) in college when she clearly had a passion for animals or science? Even her father makes a reference to her love of science when they meet for dinner. I don't quite get why her parents didn't like her and, from the story about eating in the kitchen with the nanny, appeared to NEVER have liked her. Fine. But then there's all the nervousness about her choosing a restaurant that will satisfy them and PENNY has to pay? On what planet do parents - who are both doctors - visit their child and SHE (a lowly assistant making $30k in an expensive city) has to buy THEM dinner? Whatever. This scene only served to allow Ian to express his outrage and prove something to Penny.
Although I really liked Ian (and, frankly, am enjoying his story a little more, due to his wry wit), I never really understood the attraction between these two or, really, why Sophie would have thought they'd make a great couple. So they both want kids? That's the spark that made Sophie think they should be together???? Yeah, Penny is beautiful and Ian would surely be attracted to that, but I think the 30 year age gap would be a turn-off on both their parts.
Lastly, the whole break up scene seemed very far fetched to me. Penny appeared to get her nose mostly out of joint because Ian smoked a cig with his sister. She never allowed him to explain the story behind what Bill had revealed to her, not that night nor in subsequent attempts on his part. This illustrated, to me, how very immature Penny was and once again highlighted how illogical the couple was.
I did like it because I like this author and she is an excellent writer. I can NOT WAIT for the next installment in Sophie and Neil's story. This one was passable.

Older man/younger woman scenario told extremely well!
By Laurie M. Davis
I have read Abigail Barnette's "Boss Books" series and loved it. This was equally good and had a similar theme - older man/younger woman. In this case, the age difference was a bit larger, but both the main characters are so likable and so obviously attracted to each other, that you forget most of the time that the age difference exists. And I like that they don'l let this keep them from pursuing a relationship or worry too much what other people think. The sexual chemistry is great. Some characters from the "Boss" series make an appearance, which ties this story in nicely with those. Initially Penny must get over something in Ian's past that involves Sophie and Neal, but that is handled well and believably. Loved this book and look forward to more from this author.

I don't know which was worse. Reading the bit about Penny's parents from her side or Ian's side. Either way, they're utterly despicable people. And the fact people like them actually exist makes me angry. And sad for the kids who get born to them. I enjoyed this just as much the second time around of reading it. I really do honestly enjoy reading both sides of a story about people. But that also might be because I'm kind of nosy when it comes to books especially the fluffier ones. It also might be because I get attachments to characters and like to see how their partner perceives them and what their partner thinks as well.
I think the things I love the best about this book (and consequently the other side of the story book) is Ian never pressuring her and her never feeling pressured. And Ian wanting to share the good and bad of his life with her as well as her willingness to try to share it all despite her personal beliefs. Especially when it comes to religion. Religion is important to Ian and he asks her if she'll join him at church one day so that he can share that with her. He explains that he never expects her to convert. Just that he wants to share it with her at some point but he won't pressure her to do it.
